Pregnant after 35

43 and prego with #2

Hello!  I haven't been on this site since my son was little.  He is now 7.  I am 9 weeks pregnant with our second.  This pregnancy was a total shock, as we had thought we were done.  Although, I did have a miscarriage three years ago when I had just turned 40.  I am feeling excited and nervous at the same time.  I was 35 when I was pregnant with my son and remember worrying in the first couple of trimesters that he was healthy, etc.  Of course he was and is a wonderful boy!  I just can't help but to worry about this one and my "advanced maternal age."  I know I will handle whatever comes my way, but would like to relax about this and enjoy the pregnancy.  Any advice is appreciated and welcome!

Congrats and welcome! Take solace in the fact women older than you have healthy babies everyday. I also would say to do the fetal DNA test . It is usually called maternity 21, harmony etc. it will put you at ease sooner and is over 99% accurate! Good luck with your pregnancy.

I'm 37 now.. due in June.  I went to my OB with the same concerns and she told me (it's a high risk clinic because of a previous late loss in 2011) that it's really more about your previous pregnancies and history than it is about your age.  She said it puts you at higher risk for some things but generally if you haven't had those issues in previous pregnancies.. you're less likely to have them currently which made me feel a bit better.

Congrats!! Ours was a surprise baby too.  We have a 2 yr old and a 6 yr old at home but we thought we were done. So much so that we sold all of our baby stuff!!  Guess God had different plans! :)

I've actually found the AMA diagnosis to be an advantage (I'm 37) in that they give you all the good tests right off the bat and skip the crappy ones.  For example, Harmony/Maternit21 is usually covered if you're over 35 and far more accurate than the NT/Quad screen so we skipped the latter and went straight for the former.  Also, I get ultrasounds in Maternal Fetal Medicine where their ultrasound machines are better than in regular radiology.  I have a good friend pregnant with her second at 46 (first at 44) and while she did use donor eggs everything is going perfectly for her.  Good luck!

Congrats and welcome! I've actually had my younger mommy friends get jealous of all the testing I'm offered (and insurance covers) due to my AMA status. :-) Everyone's different, but I'm a "knowledge is power" kind of person so was happy to take the Verifi test to learn as much as I could as early as I could. One thing the genetic counselor reminded me of when I had my appointment a few weeks ago was that while the odds of issues go up as you get older, the odds you'll have a healthy baby still very much outweigh any alternatives. Good luck and best wishes, mama!

Are you my twin???? My DD just turned 7, and I am also 43 and pregnant with my second child! I had a m/c last year, so I was much more nervous with this pregnancy. The plus side of being at an "advanced maternal age" is that I got a 4-D ultrasound every month and also the Panorama test, which allowed us to find out the baby's sex much earlier than I did with DD. Good luck!
