TTC after 35

wwyd: to modify data or not?

edited December 2014 in TTC after 35
a little background. I've been using digital opks for months now (yes yes, I know you all don't like them) and they've always been spot on for predicting ovulation. Fast forward to this month. I started using them on day 8 like I usually do, got highs from days 9-11, and then got a peak on day 12. Sweet, that sounds about right based on the last couple months. But, here's the kicker. My temps went up on day 10 and have stayed high since then. Yet, because of the peak on day 12, FF refuses to tell me that I ovulated (we're on day 18 now) because of course there's no temp shift AFTER the peak. So...if I remove the peak, I get crosshairs on the 10th. If I don't, then I get nada. What would you all do?  Should I leave the peak result in and assume that this cycle is more than likely annovulatory or, should I remove that peak and believe that I ovulated on the 10th? I hate mucking with data because I generally like to think more data is better, but.....

Edit to add link, because I pressed enter before I remembered to:

Re: wwyd: to modify data or not?

  • Im not familiar with OPKs but cant you just wait and see when your period arrives (if it does) and then count back 14 days to figure when you most likely ovulated and alter the data at that time? My understanding is that the time between ovulation and AF showing up is pretty consistent, so if  you know how long that phase is for you, you should be able to calculate backwards. Anyway like I said, I'm not familiar with OPKs but thats all I could think of. Hope it helps!

  • I'd remove it from the chart but it put in the notes so you can reference it later.  Don't know if you are an early tester, but I wouldn't test until later (use the Peak maybe to decide when to test?).  If you wait for AF to be missing to test then I'd take it out and just go from there, because yeah, if you weren't using the monitor you wouldn't know anyway...

Off Mirena Nov 2013, On Nuvaring end of Jan, Back off Sept 2014.  Never ending cycle starting end of Sept...
    11/14 Provera failed... cycle continues
12/14 High FSH (57 "midcycle")  OBGYN had no clue... about anything
01/15 More lab results coming back from RE. U/S showed small (1")cyst on left ovary, thin lining, and couldn't locate right ovary so  possibly straight to DE and IVF

Occassionally mess with the chart below to see "what if" and learn (not to make it pretty but because FF stays drunk with me).

  • I agree with others who said if you were not using OPKs FF would have charted everything differently.  Just make a note of it and pretend you didn't use them

  • In the end, charting/temping is for timing sex around ovulation, if you're well past that time then it doesn't really matter what the chart actually says - you can't go back in time and change the dates you had sex no matter how much chart-adjusting you do.  I've always believed in keeping all relevant info in charts no matter if you get a chart that isn't 'pretty' - fiddling with the data to make it tell you what you want it to is artificial and can mess things up more than fix them.

Oh, and if you linked your chart in your siggy, we could give you better advice specific to your chart and situation.

  • @gscoville - I linked my chart in the original post :) and I'm not trying to fiddle the data to make it pretty. I was asking because I'm still learning and I don't know if the temp change means I did ovulate regardless of what the tests show, or if it's still possible that I didn't.

  • I say leave the OPK info out.

I meant link the chart in your siggy because it helps if it's always there for future reference, without having to scroll up to the top of the thread to see it.  And whatever the reason, manipulating data in FF is never advisable.  I charted for almost two years, and had the worst luck with charts that I started manipulating or omitting data because it helped my chart to look some certain way.  FF really needs all pertinent info to help it analyze your body, if you got a peak reading that means you had some sort of surge, FF likes to know that, needs to know that to be its most accurate.  More information is always preferable to less in the long haul of FF figuring you and your body out.  Especially if you're new to charting, FF needs every bit of info you can give it, manipulating or leaving things out for any reason will just make it take that much longer for it to truly figure you out over time.

  • that makes sense @gscoville. There's a lot of people who don't know that we're trying, and I'm not super comfortable with it being available for all to see all the time without having to do some digging, which is why I haven't added to my siggy. I'm weirdly paranoid like that (part of the industry I work in I guess). Either way, I do appreciate the advice :)
