My OB asked about movement

My OB asked me yesterday if I had felt any movement. I said, "I'm pretty sure I haven't felt anything." She replied, "good. When women tell me that they're feeling the baby move at this point, I want to roll my eyes. " Lol

I was 15w5d yesterday. I felt my first two babe's move around 17-19 weeks and it wasn't consistent at all. Can't wait!

  • Still no fetal movement for me yet. I'm 16 weeks, and a second time mom. I feel lots of stuff shifting around in there, but no fetal movement.

  • While we are all on the topic of movement... I have a question for STMs or even FTMs if they know? What exactly will the "movement" feel like the first time you feel it? I know I haven't felt anything but I'm curious to know what exactly to expect? People have said it will feel like bubbles, etc. But if that's the case... How do you know for sure its not gas? What makes the difference?

Id describe it more like butterflies in your tummy. But you'll know, its something you just know.

  • You'll just know it. I always thought really early movement felt like a tickle from the wrong side of my body. Like a flutter.

  • I asked my coworkers the same thing, to which one replied, "honestly, it feels like gas." to which I then said, 'so, you're telling me I am not going to know if I have to fart or if it the baby moving?' They all laughed. Told my mom that, she said that it does NOT feel like gas...just that something is moving around inside you....either way. creeepppyyy.

I am going on 16 weeks and I am surprised at how many people have asked me if I have felt the baby yet. I   assumed 15/16 weeks was way too early?

  • I'm pretty sure that my OB would put me in my place if I tried to tell her I felt movement right now. Last week at my appointment I was telling her that I occasionally poke around trying to see if I can feel the top of my uterus yet and she said not to take it too seriously, I've still got a few weeks. I appreciate her candor.

  • Mine asked me that too when I was only 13 weeks. I said "no...isn't it a little early?" and he didn't really say anything. Then he mentioned that we could have our ultrasound in a couple weeks (meaning when I'm at 18-20 weeks, which is more than a couple I'd say). I think he just doesn't look at my chart at all before he comes in the room and didn't know how many weeks I was.

The first couple times I felt DD moving it felt like gas and only when the gas...didn't go anywhere...did I figure out it was probably her swooshing around.

I had read 16 wks to start for a second timer. I can't remember when I started feeling DD move.

When they are big (DD was HUGE) it is awesome. Although also creepy yes. DH said when his sister (who is tiny) was pregnant with her first you could literally see her whole stomach shifting when baby moved when she got close to the end. LIKE ALL THE TIME. I could sometimes see it with DD but not all the time that would freak me out.
  • My OB described it as the baby swimming in a pool and the only way you will feel him/her is if he/she bumps the side 9like you would if you were floating on a raft in a pool.

That said I think I have felt that a time or two, but only when I was laying down and shifted suddenly. Nothing consistent or like what I felt once DS1 really started moving. Of corse DS1 had the hiccups horribly and always when I was about to fall asleep.

  • When I first felt movement at 17 weeks in my last pregnancy it felt just like I had a twitch in my eye, but just a couple of inches up from my public bone. I just felt it once then two days later I felt it again. After that I can't remember when it became daily.
  • Like I said, I felt my first at 17 weeks, but not again until close to 20 weeks. My second was more like 19 weeks and she never stopped moving, so that was fun. If you think flutters and gas bubbles sounds weird. Wait until your whole stomach moves and it appears that baby is trying to come out through your belly button. I was riding with my mom in her car one day on an 11 hour road trip and my oldest (@26 weeks) did a summersault and I swear to you went from breech to head down. My mom was like, "are you okay? !" It was painful and took my breath away! Edit: auto correct blows
The same thing happened to me with #1. The movement was so painful I thought something was wrong. At my next appointment my DD was breech and stayed that way until the end.

I am 15w6d with #3 and feel flutters once and a while. You can definitely tell the difference between gas and those flutters.

  • I wish I knew exactly when mine started. I felt some things I couldn't say one way or the other, but then it felt like I got poked from the inside. It was really noticeable. And then back to just twitches and so on. I had an appointment on Monday and while the doctor was doing the ultrasound, right where she was holding the transducer, there was this big jolt that I thought came from the thing she was holding. I said, "What was that?" and she replied, "Movement," which I thought was kind of vague. So I asked, "Like, of the baby?" and she said yes! So I'm not crazy, that was really the baby moving! I am sixteen weeks and everything I've read says it can start that early, but since I'm a FTM I didn't expect it so soon. Now I feel Baby kicking at times throughout the day, but most often when it's late and I'm trying to sleep. 8-| Still, it's amazing and blew my mind. It makes the baby seem so much more real.

  • My poor hubby tried to "feel" the movement last night when I could feel a little flutter, he quickly put his hand on my tummy. LOL. I had to remind him he has to wait  A LOT longer than me. I'm 16w4d and just started feeling my little butterfly, but with my first pregnancy it was more like 20 weeks.

Just finished a midwife appointment, I'm 15 weeks 3 days and she asked if I was feeling anything. I explained I feel a kind of tickle/fluttery feeling but I don't think it's the baby 'cause it seems soon, she said it might be. Babe was squirming around like crazy during the Doppler. My uterus is 2 inches under my belly button, based off of charts I've seen that's kind of high?

It's a sweet idea but I don't get too caught up in the "omg was that baby?" When I have a definitive moment where I'm like "wow, for sure that's the baby" at 18 weeks+ then I'll get excited and enjoy. No rush for me.

A couple of times I think I've felt what I would equate to a little tiny muscle spasm right above my pubic bone... the eye twitches like @hazeldublin mentioned sounds right, too.  But still, I'm not going to go all OMG IT'S THE BABY until I know for sure. I've got some pretty stellar intestinal things going on, too, so that's definitely not out of the question.

  • I actually thought for a moment I had felt the baby move last night (15w6d). It felt similar to gas, but more solid if that makes any sense. I took it as it was gas. I also took it as a sign to be on the lookout for something similar in the future.

  • I didn't for sure feel DS until 21 weeks. Because it's was an incredibly noticeable 'thunk' that couldn't possibly be anything other than a human growing inside me haha. After that it was non stop and really obvious.

I saw my dr on Tuesday at 14w6d and she didn't ask me if I've felt anything yet.
  • My midwife drove me nuts by trying to measure fundal height at 8 weeks.  GAAAAAH, crazy woman, there's not something wrong because my uterus is not above my pelvic girdle at 8 weeks.  I'm still trying to switch to another midwife there who I know isn't a crazy person.

  • Just got back from the OB and she also asked me if I was feeling any movement (sounded like a checklist of questions she was going through) and when I said no she said yeah it's unlikely because it's still too soon.

  • STM here and I remember with my first people asking (on a similar message board set-up) what baby would feel like those first detectable movements (and how to tell them apart from gas or whatever) and the experienced moms would all say "you'll just know it when you feel it"... And then a few months down the road when it came to be time for us to have our babies, the board was flooded with questions about how to know for sure you're in labor/how to distinguish real contractions from BH and whatnot... Again, the answer was the same. Haha. Annoying and vague and didn't seem helpful at all, but sure enough, they were right.
(Even though I definitely rolled my eyes a few times... I don't wanna "just know" when it happens, I want to know ahead of time what to expect! Lol)
  • My LO wouldn't stop moving at my NT scan (lots of kicking!) but I apparently have an anterior placenta - doesn't that typically mean I won't feel movement until later?  I feel like ladies on here have said as such.

I don't believe there's an exact point when you start feeling them across the board. It varies woman to woman based on a variety of factors. I have tried to focus really hard at nights lately (I'm 15w6d) but alas I've felt nothing. Does this mean I think it's impossible another woman might feel her baby at 15w6d? Nope. I think it's kind of "high and mighty" when other people tell you what you can and can't feel because who knows really. I'd feel weird if my OB said something like that to me.

I'm a FTM and have no idea but another Bumpie said her experience was like a goldfish swimming. Sounds different to what JimBob wrote so it must vary. I'm 15w now and looking forward to feeling the first movement. I was told by the ultrasound technician that my placenta is at the front so I most likely won't feel anything until 20 weeks. Boo hoo.

I'm 16w4d now, and my first flutter was when I was 12w6d. It felt like a muscle twitch from inside, and my mom felt it and she's the one who told me it's probably the baby. I didn't feel it again until last week at 15w4d, and it moves around a lot. It's been pretty consistent since then, almost every evening when I'm relaxed on the couch. I rest my hand on my lower abdomen and feel LO give little bumps against me. DP has felt it once, but it's much easier for me to feel it inside and out. I've noticed he/she is more active right after I eat and when I lay down. So I think it's totally possible to feel it at 15weeks or so. I'm a FTM but I know this is the LO, it's the same feeling each time and it's nothing like gas bubbles I've had lol. Definitely fills my heart with love and joy! :x

Eta: I'm also a pretty thin woman to start, and I felt my first few movements when I was leaned back/lying on my back, when it was easy to feel my uterus and see my bump. Dr told me thinner-build women may feel movement sooner than other builds. Also I agree that you'll be able to tell the difference between baby and bodily stuff!

  • Thanks for the answers everyone! I hope I do get to feel my baby soon. I've had twitchy feelings & bubbles but I just don't think it's the baby quite yet! & most mothers say when you know you know... So maybe soon :x

  • I actually think that's pretty rude to ask you a question and basically tell her what you think to be true and she rolls her eyes. Unprofessional to say the least.
  • As for feeling the baby .. The very early stages were light tapping. I agree with the muscle eye twitch feeling in your lower abdomen . but later it's solid hits.
  • Just had an appointment with the OB at 13 weeks on Wednesday. She just gave me the preemptive "you might feel some movement in a few weeks, but don't panic if you don't, that's normal too."

LO was a lot less active at this ultrasound than the last one, but heartbeat was good and doc seemed happy. Maybe it was just having a nap. On that note - I'm not on the "gonna die of anticipation before I find out the sex" train, but I am looking forward to not calling it "it" anymore.

I just had an appt on Monday and my nurse and then my doctor asked me if I had felt anything.  I was just about 16 weeks, I told them no.  Honestly it worried me a little bit because I read as a first time mom I wouldn't feel it very early and then they all asked me so that made me think I was missing something.  I asked if I should be feeling something and my doctor said not necessarily, she just wanted to ask.  Then she said if I didn't feel anything by 20 weeks we would probably check on some things.  I dunno, it just seemed like one more thing to make me overly anxious about.

*I was close enough to 16 weeks,  I can't get my ticker to change so oh well.  I still don't know why she asked so early.

I don't see anything here to indicate that your doctor told you what you felt at 12 weeks was the baby. Just that it's possible for thinner women to feel movement sooner.

I don't think there's anything wrong with sharing your experience, but you should know that this board is incredibly sceptical of people claiming to feel the baby before it is commonly accepted to be possible. According to what I've read, 16-22 weeks is normal for the first feeling. I was shocked to feel it so early (around 15-16 weeks) as a FTM since normally it's felt later the first time. I didn't even believe it until it happened with the doctor right there and the doctor confirmed it for me. I certainly wasn't going to post here until I had a doctor's direct confirmation.

  • @beattykid  did they tell you if you might have an anterior placenta?   I do, and my OB told me I not feel movement until a bit later than usual (because its an extra layer between teeny tiny limbs and my abdominal muscles (where the nerves are that pick up the kicks).   I'm glad she told me so I won't be worrying if I'm not feeling anything for a while yet.    She also said the chances of feeling anything, regardless, were very very slim before 16 weeks, and to just focus on the strong heartbeat and lack of pain or bleeding to reassure me during normal irrational mom fears :)
