So for any of my other mama's with kiddos with tubes, I thought I'd share our 2nd experience with DS being older this time (He was 16 months this first time). So we found out that the surgery was at 10:55 AM - I was so worried about him not eating in the morning! Luckily he could have clear apple juice up until 2 hours before and my child is obsessed with having his sippy with him, so that really helped. After 8:55 I just did my best to distract and play with him and he actually did ok but I could tell he was getting hungry. He asked for a snack and I said sorry hunny, not now and he looked so sad LOL. We got there and they took us quickly, but we did end up waiting another hour and a half total before he went in - I felt so bad because I was so hungry myself! He was a good boy, though, and CHOP has pretty cool toys for them. The procedure itself went just fine and they let him stay asleep for 30 minutes since it was his nap time. When I woke him up though - oh my goodness. It was one of the saddest experiences I've had. In the room and the entire way in the car he was freaking out and I couldn't console him. He was screaming, kicking, hitting, biting (me and himself), wouldn't drink or eat - was just SO mad and so unlike my boy. I cried because it was really hard to see and to not be able to help. Luckily H ended up being able to come so he helped a lot - he drove while I did everything I could to try to calm him. I think the pain meds kicked in when we got home because after about 30 mins of soothing he wanted his sippy, and then right after that he started eating, watching a movie, and getting back to himself. From there he was just fine - he took a nap for me at 4 until 6 (which I was nervous about) but still went to bed at 8:30 and slept until 7:15! The ear drops seems to not bother him as much this time and I can already tell he feels better - he was just SO happy this morning.
Anyway, sorry this got long. I just wanted to share because his anger scared me (though there was another kid doing the same thing across the hall). The nurses assured me it's really normal and he was just fine, but he didn't react like that last time (he just cried a bit that time). I hope you all don't need another set, though! One of the mom's was there for their FIFTH SET of tubes. Ahh!
