NWMR - older sibling all of a sudden waking in the MOTN

Hi Ladies,

I am on ML with #2 who is 3 weeks old.  My DD (2 1/2) who has slept through the night for months has all of a sudden started waking up the last 2 nights.  The night before she called for DH and wanted him to find her stuffed animal.  Last night she woke up twice and only wanted me.  The first time she wanted a story and the second time she needed to use the potty.  She is potty trained but wear a diaper for bed.  Anyway I couldn't go in the second time because I was nursing the baby so DH went in and told her he could taker her potty or she could pee pee in her diaper.  She is currently screaming in there.  I really hope this isn't going to be every single night.  Is it normal for them to start waking again once the new baby comes?  Not sure how to handle it other than send DH in.

Re: NWMR - older sibling all of a sudden waking in the MOTN

  • Sorry, don't know what happened above...

We had a rough few weeks after DS was born in August. DD, who had been able to go to bed by herself for a -year-and-a-half suddenly started having terrible tantrums at bedtime. I found that it really helped to have some special time with just the two of us before bed. I started her bedtime routine about 20 minutes earlier so we had time for more stories and to rock her.  When I wanted to put her to bed after rocking her, I would tell her I would count to 10 and then she was going to bed. This has seemed to work really well. Now, we just do stories and half the time she asks for DS to join us. I also make an effort to do one thing with just the two of us per week. Sometimes its just a trip to the store but she enjoys having my undivided attention. Hang in there! It will get better!

  • I am pregnant with #2 so I dont have experience but my best friends 2 LOs are 20 months apart and with her older one she had a similar issue. Her DH would wind up sleeping on the floor of DS1's room! I think its totally normal and all part of the adjustment period...so just need to weather the storm and try to create as few bad habits as possible! (I am dreading this part)
