Cloth Diapering

What should I buy to send to day care?

I just found out that my top two choices for DC both accept cloth diapers! I kinda wasn't even banking on this, so I haven't given my stash a thought in that regard. My original plan was to do TT fitteds/fusions (snap) and then snap work horses with thirsties covers.

Now I'm thinking I want to do AO1 and/or pockets. I'm thinking 20 so I can still wash EOD? I currently have 20 TT and maybe 5 pockets (BG and Simplex). Since I feel like I have to have a secondary stash of aplix, I want to keep it a touch cheaper. Should I go for Nikki's diapers? I think I want to stay away from the bargin basement China cheapies.

Help, pretty please? How many/what brand/what style would you suggest?

  • We send BG pockets with snaps to daycare and never had issues.  I use those occasionally at home as well so I didn't need a second stash really.

I sent aplix a couple times and realized they were folding them like a disposable to put in the wet bag, as in they would roll the diaper and velcro the wings to diaper part, which was obviously causing lots of pulling and fuzziness. I quickly stopped sending velco.

I have both Grovia and BG FT AIO, and I prefer the FT. They're husband proof too LOL. I got some as good deals on the swap thread, and it appears the solids are less expensive than prints.

I personally don't know how many you would need. Glad to hear your top two DC choices are willing to CD though. HTH.
  • My stash is mainly BG 4.0 pockets, so I just send those. I send 7 for a 11 hour day and most days he doesn't use them all.

  • @RockiesNugget, are they snap or aplix? I've heard not such good things about the aplix.

  • I really love the new Thirsties one size AIO in hook and loop. If I could do it over, I'd buy those for daycare. Jack be Natural has them buy 6 get 1 free.

Where are you seeing the buy 6/get 1 free?

  • We send either H&L or snap diapers with 2 rows of snaps with the 2 snaps together (like BGs or Blueberry), the diapers with hip snaps or 3 snaps (like Kawaii or the duo sized Thirsties) almost never get snapped properly so I stopped sending those.   Some seem to like the H&L because it's closer to disposables, some like snaps so there is no question of how tight/loose the diaper should be, just snap it on like the last one (also helps to have put it in the bag snapped together how you want it on the child).   You might try bringing in what pockets you have and see what the daycare workers think or them or if they would prefer H&L.

That's a great idea. I might pop over to Babies R Us and grab an aplix just so they can see what they're like and make a choice!

I think whether you send snaps or Aplix depends on how much experience they have with CD. We had DS at a daycare that had no issue with snaps, but that place also had another child who wore CD. At his current two daycares, he is the only one in CD, and after seeing how creative they were with snaps, I started sending Aplix.
  • When we used daycare I had two in diapers, we sent kawaiis for both and saved my cute fun prints for home ;) another mom used cloth in the infant room too so my fear was one of my diapers would end up at her house or vice versa so I didn't like sending the pricier ones.

  • I did end up buying Aplix for our DC. I tried snaps first, and they never got them on properly. Softbums are my favorite because they don't have to worry about the rise snaps either.

  • My daycare has no problems with snaps. I have concluded I loathe Aplix. We send cheapie pockets I got from Craigslist, so if they get trashed my heart will not be broken. We are considering buying a whole daycare stash of Best Bottoms because Mister hates unstuffing used pockets, and he really loves BB.

  • I send snap BG 4.0s to daycare. We have 10 or so dedicated to daycare use. I send two aplix diapers as well, but they always attach the aplix to the PUL like a sposie. I can imagine that it will wear the PUL out over time. I don't think they would understand attaching it to the laundry tabs and I don't want to make more work for them. For those reasons, I won't be buying any more aplix diapers for daycare.

  • I guess I'll have to see how/if they'll do snaps. I'd much rather do that since that's my entire stash so far!

Mine are all snaps. For the most part they don't have an issue with the snaps.

  • Our daycare uses snaps with no issues. You can buy snaps and snap them into the unused ones on the diaper, so they only have open snaps in the appropriate location. I stopped sending aplix because, like someone else said, they rolled up the used diaper like a sposie and tried to attach it to the PUL. I also send AIO's instead of pockets. I hate stuffing pockets, and I hated unstuffing all the ones from daycare more.

  • It's not for daycare (yet), but we use thirsties one size pockets and love them. Inserts agitate out, so no unstuffing and it makes them easier to stuff. I'm hoping to find a daycare that'll do cloth and planning to put snaps into the unused snaps as @Brandiewine11‌ mentioned.

A friend mentioned that it is really hard to get the dummy snaps off. That you need the leverage of the fabric to pull the snaps apart.
That is true. But you can use something small to just pry them apart without too much of a problem. I haven't put blanks on the diapers, but when doing other projects, I just use the mini flathead screwdriver that lives by my sewing machine when I n. Since you don't do it all the time, it shouldn't create a problem.
