Postpartum Depression

Progesterone Treatment for PPD?

Has anyone done progesterone treatments for Post-partum depression? I just heard about this and really want to get some more info about it. I guess it is meant for women who are sensitive to progesterone changes or naturally have low progesterone.

Re: Progesterone Treatment for PPD?

  • I have never heard of progesterone used for that. I was put on progesterone suppositories from week 5 to week 11 of my pregnancy due to previous losses. I'm interested to see if you find out anything more.

  • Yes yes and YES! I chart my cycles religiously and have a history of low progesterone. When my cycles returned at 4 months post partum, I had terrible depression, anxiety and mood swings. I started taking Prometrium each month after I ovulated and things changed for me OVERNIGHT. Check out NaPro Technology and Creighton Model.
  • My PPD came on at 4 months when my period returned too! Totally going to check it out. Thank you!

So how did you go about getting treatment for this? My doctors so far don't seem to know very much about the use of progesterone for treating PPD. Did you find a doctor who was already familiar with it, or was your current doctor already familiar and recommended it? I can suggest this to my doctor but I'm not sure if I need to be seeing a specialist or a doctor at least familiar with this.
  • I started taking birth control pills to help with my hormone induced depression (my mood would drop right after ovulation). Is this a similar idea?
