Re: Puffs

  • Nutritionally, I don't think they are that great. But since they melt I think it's a good, safe first finger food. I just bought some yesterday and LO is 9 months.
  • Loading the player...
  • I started letting J have puffs when he went on a puree strike around 7 months. It really helped him with the pincer grasp and now he's eating a bunch of different finger foods.

  • We started them around 7 months. They may not be great nutritionally, but I don't think they're all that bad. They really helped her develop her pincer grasp, which I think it's valuable. I buy Happy brand because they use fruit juice instead of sugar. Makes me feel a little better ha

  • I haven't bought 'puffs' so he hasn't had them.
As for other small finger snacks, he gets Cheerios every now and then since about 6 months.
I don't shop in the baby food section where I assume these are?
  • We started at 7 months. I felt more comfortable with her trying more solid food that dissolves so she doesn't choke :)

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • She was getting a few puffs at the end of her meal, but then daddy came up and fed her some and she gagged/choked.  Honestly I think it was just her gag reflex, but it scared the wits out of MH.  He yanked the tray off, unbuckled her from her high chair and swept her mouth with his finger.

So now we're sticking to purees and other table food that has puree consistency.  We'll try puffs again soon, she's got to eat more solids eventually, but I am fine with holding off for a bit.  Like I said, I don't think she was truly choking but it was a little scary.

Our "puffs" are blueberries or Cheerios.

Same with the Cheerios. She LOVES them. Started giving them around 8.5-9 months. I'll have to try some blueberries- I just figured they aren't very good this time of year but I really want another easy snacky food for her.

  • We do puffs for eating therapy. Nothing else dissolves the same way. He doesn't have the pincher grasp yet so I put one in his cheek or crumble a little on his purées. It helps him to figure out how to do the process and tolerate textures.
  • Do you break the puffs or feed them whole?

I have been breaking them into 3-4 pieces but have recently been thinking of giving them to her whole...  She loves the Mum-mum's

  • I don't remember 100% when we started, but I guessed 5 months? It was either 5 or 6 for sure.

That early I would put one in her mouth and watch her like a hawk. Now she's got the pincer grasp down and feeds herself puffs, Cheerios, crackers, and whatever else I throw in front of her.

She's very good at mashing with her gums seeing as today she was demanding bites of my sandwich.

  • @angelsnight - new CPR recommendations are not to do a finger sweep unless you can see the item....I didn't know this until we just took our CPR class when we were starting solids. I guess more people end up causing the item to become further lodged than actually removing it.

Crap, and we JUST took an infant CPR class. Either they didn't tell us that or we didn't hear it. Thanks for the info.

  • @fish8412‌ I buy it at Stop and Shop grocery store In the natural food section. I think it's also at Whole Foods.

  • She hated the puffs but loves her Cheerios and mum mums. She has a harder time picking the Cheerios up, so less likely to shovel a bunch in as well.
  • We stared with puffs. We have replaced them as a "snack" with cheerios for when she is actually hungry but they are an awesome distraction! So if it's not a meal time or she doesn't want cheerios we give them to her.

In the shopping cart she gets puffs, in the car if I'm in the back seat with her and she's screaming, and at a restaurant when she's getting antsy.
We won't do cheerios in the car because she randomly will swallow it tok quick and I'm paranoid

What are puffs? Are they like rusks? If so we tried him with them around five months maybe. He was and remains totally uninterested. He likes teething biscuits though.

  • Or usually like this For those who don't get the organic ones

  • We call puffs "baby crack" at our house.

DD1 loved puffs and we used them a lot when we traveled to keep her a happy baby.  :)  (I don't remember how much she ate them at home....I'm sure some.  But I just remember that we always made sure to have them for travel!)

DD2 probably started around 7 months?  Give or take?  She is SUCH a different eater than her sister!  DD1 did BLW and never gagged once.  DD2 gags a lot more so we've been slower to start "real" food.  But she likes puffs and they help keep her entertained while I'm getting dinner to the table so she has some puffs every day.  I should try Cheerios and see how she does...

  • Huh. Nope, no puffs here! We've done lots of soft squishy fruit and veg for finger foods---peach, pear, banana, soft squash cubes etc.

  • LO loves Puff's! I just shake the container and she starts clapping. I started to give them to her a lot and I realized that it's as bad as snacking on crap so I switched to mashed up bananas. But we take puffs to dinners out.

I've given her puffs since she was 6months old. Her babysitter started her on them, and she really liked them. Those who feed their LOs Cheerios, did you wait until they had teeth? I have been thinking of giving Abby Cheerios but she doesn't have any teeth and was wondering if they would be a good idea or not.

I've bought one can on sale for $1.50? It's not even all the way gone (apparently we don't use them enough?) but my H bought a fancier brand at the store the other day. They're banana flavored and smell terrible.

But they're easy to stuff in a diaper bag.

  • They seem kind of expensive for what they are.

Absolutely true. But for my LO it's the only non-puree he can pallet (sp) now, so it's my "gateway" food I hope & a short term expense.

Yes exactly. My daughter never ate them BC she never needed them. For Will since they are necessary for training purposes the expense is easily justified. Plus he eats so slowly it's actually no expense.

We did not wait for teeth. Cheerios get soft and mushy too. LO just got his first 2 teeth a month or so ago. LO has been eating all sorts of solid food since 6 months.
DS1 was eating steak with no teeth from 6 months on.

  • We started with puffs at 6-7 months. He loves feeding himself. Now we have graduated to cheerios, which is nice because they are way cheaper.  The yogurt drops are like baby crack, however.

We've been trying various baby cookies - like arrowroot and banana cookies.  Problem is M really started gagging because he didn't take bites and gnaw on them, shoved the whole thing in his mouth.  So now those get broken up.

  • I've been afraid to do puffs because we've done a few foods and had a few gagging/coughing incidents. LO has 0 teeth and although he adorably mimics us 'munching' when we eat, he is still getting the hang of it. He turned 8 months on the 14th.

Just today I got some cereal cookie things (the mum-mums). LO ate a (homemade) gingerbread cookie over the weekend so hopefully he can handle these. we will use them just as a distraction / occasional treat if he manages them ok.

he does pretty well with purees and will take bites of soft bananas, strawberries, carrots, etc. although I'm big into the organic / super healthy foods, lo got some 'sweet potato discs' at a restaurant the other day (they were firm on the outside, soft inside, kinda like a fry, but I'm not sure if they were baked or fried) to keep him occupied while we ate and he did great with them! I thought he would just play with them but he watched me eat one and then he happily mashed the soft insides out of them with his gums. definitely a treat kind of food, but a wonderful distraction.
