Elevated AFP- possible spina bifida **update**

Last week, I had a normal 17 week-6day checkup at the Ob along with a urine and blood test. Today, we got a phone call You never want to get- test came back positive for possible spina bifida. All other tests have been negative and not a carrier for any genetic abnormalities at this point. My elevated AFP levels indicate the baby could have spina bifida or it could be a false positive. The only way to confirm is with an ultrasound. We have our A/S scheduled for next Tuesday, where they will look at the baby's spine closely. I hate that we have to wait a week to find out! I was so excited for the A/S and now I just feel sick! What are the odds it is a false positive?? Anyone know of anyone experience elevated AFP and have everything turn out ok?

Stimmed for 9 days, trigger on 8/20~ 32-36 follicles seen, 16 measured on each side
ER~ 8/22 ~ 36 follicles retrieved! 21 Mature, 17 ISCI'd
8/27~Day 5 transfer of 2 BB blasts, 1 to freeze
9/9~ BFP!! Beta #1- 978
9/11~ Beta #2- 1965
9/15~ Beta #3-7480
1st ultrasound 9/24

    I'm so sorry you are dealing with this! I sometimes feel like all these tests just make it hard to really enjoy the pregnancy. How high was your AFP? As with all tests, they are looking at the norm (1.0 MoM) and deviations from the norm are flagged as abnormal. I think these tests have a lot of false positives, and AFP varies from woman to woman. Fingers crossed for a good A/S!

    Feb 2014: another round of Femara+TI: BFN, endometrioma is back!
    March 2014- July 2014: continous Lupron to shrink endo 
    July 2014: IVF 1: 9R, 7M, 5F, 5 beautiful day 5 blasts! eSET, 4 snowbabies! Beta: #1 2936 Beta # 2 7684 1st ultrasound 5w6d: saw yolk and sac, 2nd ultrasound 6w6d: heartbeat!! 112 bpm 7w6d heartbeat!! 148 bpm 9w 2d measuring right on track heartbeat! 175 bpm

    When I asked the nurse what my levels were, she said 1/93 which means nothing to me lol she did say it was "a little elevated" (I wrote that down specifically). Not really sure at all. Thanks for the well wishes!! Trying not to be stressed but they sure don't make it easy!

    ((hugs)) I've seen a few ladies around here have false positives for SB. I hope you get good news next week. Sorry you have to wait so long.

    I have no experience to share, but wanted to wish you good luck on Tuesday.
    Me 27 DH 29 Married since 2007, together since 2001
    Off BC since Febuary 2006 3 Clomid Cycles in 2008- symptomatic, US just showed a tilted uterus, otherwise normal, HSG normal.  DH has an ejaculatory duct obstruction and a congenital absence of the vas deferens.  This is common with cystic fibrosis carriers, but he doesn't have cystic fibrosis. IVF #1 with TESE/ICSI (Antagonist protocol) Aug 2014=BFN (poor embryo quality)   IVF #2 ICSI long lupron protocol November 2014

    I did also have an elevated AFP. And I was also so upset after I got the call. I had the u/s and everything looked fine.

    The other issue you could have is a placenta issue which are hard to see on an u/s so I had growth scans every 4 wks after 24 wks.

    Everything turned out fine. My twins are both healthy and amazing. But I know how you are feeling and I'm so sorry you are going through this. I hope you get wonderful news next week that your baby is healthy.

    1/93 sounds like you have a 1 out of 93 chance. Which is less than a 2% chance. It's raised compared to the general public, but soooo many of these scares turn out to be nothing. I feel like I have seen a gazillion "elevated risk" screenings that turn out to be nothing. I hope that's the same for you!

    I agree with the above.  Things like "slightly elevated" and "1/93" don't sound TOO bad...but of course it's higher than the norm and you won't be at peace until you know for sure at the A/S.  FX everything turns out just fine and it's a false positive.

    Me: 34 / DH: 33
    19-year history of endometriosis. Multiple surgeries and cyst removals. Forced directly into IVF due to blocked tubes and severe adhesions.
    IVF w/ICSI and CCS #1 - Dec 2013 - Only 1 normal. Ended in CP
    IVF w/ICSI and CCS #2, at CCRM - March 2014!
    14R, 12 ICSI'd, 11F, 6 for CCS, 5 healthy blasts frozen!
    Two 5BB blasts transferred 9/10; First beta 9/19: 109; second beta 9/22: 550!
    EDD: 5/29/15

    I just read an article about how common false positives are.  I would say try to relax as much as you can, since stressing isn't going to help anything.  I would assume everything is fine and you just need confirmation from the u/s.  Please do let us know!

    I know this is scary and not what you wanted to hear at all. Try to remember that a 1/93 chance means that the chances and MUCH higher that everything is completely fine. There are so many false positive. I'm sorry you have to wait a week for some reassurance though. <3

    IVF #1 October 2013 Antagonistic Protocol with ICSI  ER 10/31/13 (18R 16M 11F- 6 blasts to freeze)
    ET delayed due to OHSS 
    FET scheduled for July 8. Delayed due to a crazy high TSH (it had been under control for YEARS!)
    FET #1 8/5/14 sET BFN

    Yay! I'm glad everything looks good. There was never a clear reason for mine to be high. But I also ended up delivering at 32 wks. Hopefully everything will continue to go smoothly.

    Great update! I was going to add that SB comes in several variations. My cousin was born with SB. They did surgery at 6 months, she's 5 now and is active and wild like a normal 5 year old. It's def scary. I'm waiting on my results they are suppose to be in soon. Glad your ultrasound was good!

    Off BC since Febuary 2006 3 Clomid Cycles in 2008- symptomatic, US just showed a tilted uterus, otherwise normal, HSG normal.  DH has an ejaculatory duct obstruction and a congenital absence of the vas deferens.  This is common with cystic fibrosis carriers, but he doesn't have cystic fibrosis. IVF #1 with TESE/ICSI (Antagonist protocol) Aug 2014=BFN (poor embryo quality)   IVF #2 ICSI long lupron protocol November 2014

IVF #2 (antagonist protocol) Feb 2014 => Converted to IUI (Perfect conditions). BFN. IVF #2.1 w/ new RE June 2014: Antagonist protocol. 33R, 31M, 30F, 19 blasts to test!!! I made it through without crashing!! :) Hats off to Dr. Fancypants!! ET of one 5AB blast. BFN. 13 10 CCS'ed snowflakes! FET #1 PUPO as of 7/29 Betas: 8/7@24, 8/9@97, 8/11@334 (etc.) Two sacs on 8/15, one seen on 8/18 after a bleed. U/s 8/25 (6+3) "perfect": 5.9 mm + HB@120bpm! U/s 9/4 (7+6): 15.9 mm + HB@172 bpm! Please, PLEASE stick this time!!!!
