Any one else done work???

I'm 32wks now and seriously thinking about being done with work.

I work nights (11pm-7am) and it's getting really hard to stay awake now. I planned working until Jan 10, when I'd be 36 weeks but I just don't think I can make it that long.

Anybody else?????

  • What do you do, if you don't mind me asking?

  • I work front desk at a hotel.

Not a physically tiring job but it is hard to be awake all night and babysit a desk and deal with the late night guests/drunkards.

  • @krendel1990‌ might have some perspective for you (you're an ast. Manager at a hotel, right?)
  • Anyway, I'm a barista & I won't lie: it's getting REALLY hard to be on my feet all day. I'm not just standing, but I'm actually on bar for 8 hours a day. I'm worn out but there is no way I'm going to just not work. I need to make enough average hours to get max maternity leave pay. If you can afford it, go for it, but I personally can't.
  • I stopped working a couple of months ago. I was a substitute teacher though so it is a little different because I only have to work 3 days a semester.

  • I can't change to day time shifts unfortunatley.
I'm not really worried about it financially.
I just started working a year ago two nights a week because I had been off work the previous five years as a stay at home mom but craved some real world/adult interaction so working nights twice a week fit into our life best and I'm a huge night owl so I can normally stay awake no problem.

Living in Canada also gives me a year off paid at a reduced amount so that helps out too, even though my income is just extra and being saved for a rainy day.

I just love working there and don't want to leave early but it's getting hard.

  • I am a middle school teacher and am on my feet all day. This baby is sitting so low my hips hurt. If we could afford it I would be done working at 36 weeks. We can barely afford 10 weeks maternity leave so I will be working up until the day this little bean comes out. If you can afford it and want to take the time off I certainly would!
  • That's what I was thinking. It's definitely not going to get an easier and I can't just all of a sudden leave one day.

They do know I'll be leaving soon and they have someone to do my job ready for when that day comes but I'm just not the kind of person that can be like "this is hard now, bye."

  • I can't do night shift so sympathies there.

I plan to work full-time till my water breaks.  I do three 13hr shifts/wk as a RN so it's getting more physically demanding to be on my feet, walking, lifting that long.  I get 12 weeks unpaid FMLA so trying to save those up (6wks for vaginal delivery recovery + 6 weeks bonding).

  • I am not but I have been advised by doctors and other professionals in my industry that 30 weeks is usually when people go (my boss is shocked I am working so late)! I am planning to work up until 39 weeks. I am 32 now and finding it extremely hard even though I have a desk job, But I committed myself to training a new person early January so I can't leave early or else I would move it to 35-36 weeks. However, I do get a year mat leave too and If I didn't get so long I would work until my due date. If I were you I would give your notice and go off asap!

I feel for you. That's a hard job to do while pregnant and I certainly would try to tough it out longer than I could if I only got 12 weeks off too. Nothing worse than spending time off with no baby to adore if you can help it.

Same here as far as working till delivery so I can save all 12 weeks for after he's born. Although my job is not nearly as hard as I imagine yours is!! You must be one tough mama!
  • My last day at work is the 16th, I'll be stopping just as I hit 33 weeks.

I work till 7:30-8 in the evenings and this past week I've really started to feel it! I could of probably done a few more weeks but My oh works very unfriendly hours and we wanted to spend time doing extra Xmas stuff with out 8 year old.

  • <3@chickenhawke‌

Yeah, sounds like you really do have the opportunity to leave, so I would. We have to start putting our LO first, meaning listening to our bodies. @jknallen‌
  • Initially I was very optimistic and thought I would work until 39w3d. And I worked out a budget to support being off for 4 months for my maternity leave. But as I get closer to my due date I am reeeally rethinking the whole work until I pop. I love my work but it is stressful and my OB gently suggests stopping work at 36 weeks.

@jknallen: if you don't need the money and the job is being more stressful/harder than expected, I would give some notice and leave early. You are growing a human, be kind to yourself.

I've heard this, too. I'm at 32 weeks now. My plan was to stop working a week before my due date and people are shocked. I'm a teacher, and people constantly tell me they can't believe I'm still at work or that I'm coming back after the baby is born. Their responses make me feel like maybe I won't make it to 39 weeks... but that's my plan unless baby girl has ulterior motives. Being on my feet all day is tough but not tough enough for me to go on leave. The constant irritation and annoyance I feel on a daily basis with people in general, however, might put me over the edge.
  • I worked until the morning my water broke at 39 weeks with LO #1. It wasn't ultra uncomfortable I'm pretty sure I wasn't super productive either. I got up to pee about 10 times a day and people kept stopping by to see if I had the baby, hmmm, lol.

  • I'm down to half days at work, I teach. Hopefully I can at least finish out next week and then we'll be in winter break. When we return from break I'll be almost 34 weeks with these girls, and don't know if my docs will want me going back to work that close after my slight scare yesterday.

Personally I wouldn't waste my fmla/disability on time off without the baby. Try to tough it out As long as you can.

Eta...Eh never mind, just noticed you are in Canada :) i would probably still hold off a bit if I could but you are lucky and get tons of time off I would leave early!

  • @PeaceofKia‌ sorry to hear about your scare glad the babies and you are okay! @‌jknallen I would give my notice I work 6 days at and I sit at a desk it's sooooo hard but financially I cannot afford to take off my short term disability will only replace 60% of my pay seems like u don't have to work so why be miserable

  • I'm a teacher so I have one more week of teaching before the break. I'm hoping to work 3 weeks after but we'll see what my doctor says and how I feel. I'm also in Canada so I do get the year off. If I do end up going early, I'll just use some of my sick days that I have and then still start my mat leave when i planned too.

  • I'm Working 12 hour night shifts full time ( registered nurse ) it is getting harder to do . I'm exhausted and not sure how much longer I can hold off . Ideally I'd love to work up until 37 weeks ( induction at 38 weeks due to hypertension ) My Bp is trending upward and I'm not sleeping well ... It's a tough time .
  • I plan on/hope to work til I pop. I work overnight too, typically 12-14 hour shifts. I am super jealous of a desk job since I'm up and down, running around, kneeling on the floor with doggie patients. @Vkiefert, I feel ya! It's getting rough but I want more time after she's born. A colleague worked a 12 hour shift and then went into labor 3 hours later. She's a tough cookie.
  • I'm a college professor and I was planning on working as late as possible, but the spring semester starts when I am 37 1/2 weeks and my boss thinks it would be too difficult to find coverage for my classes for part of a semester. My last final exam period of the fall semester is Wednesday (at 32 1/2 weeks), then I just have to do final grades and I'm done. I may teach a summer session in May but only if I can get a class I have taught before. There's no way I'm teaching a new prep with a newborn and two toddlers.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • Well I left my manager a note when I was workin last night to tell him I'm done.

The person taking my shifts til I come back is already there, trained and waiting to take them over so I will either have two more weeks left or if she wants to starts doing my shifts now I said that would be fine with me.

So it's up to my manager and her how long I have to work now. Max will be two weeks since that's the notice I have to technically give them. Hoping for less!

  • Technically I am done with work so I own a company that does on-location beauty services, mainly for weddings. It isn't peak wedding season so I'm not scheduled for any appointments until April which works well for me.
  • I am all done with work as of 27w5d, but I was hospitalized.
  • I'm 31 weeks my doctor reduced me to 2 days a week plan on staying until a week b4 due date seems like your able to leave now if you can afford it why not

I finally received my release from work this week, I'm a flight attendant and at 29 weeks, I'm all set!! Yay!
  • I'm a teacher too. No sub hired yet, but I'm planning on teaching as long as I can, in order to stay out thru the end if the year.

Reading these are making me think about going out a little earlier tho. Maybe I'll check in with my doc...
  • I wish. If I started my leave now, I won't have anytime with the baby after she's actually here.
