Advice on prefolds?

I used NB GMD prefolds but sadly baby is growing out of them (absorbency wise). GMD mediums are an obvious next move but are there other options you all like that are less expensive or maybe better than the GMD ones?

Anyone try the econobum diaper with prefold trial? Looked like a good deal but probably too good to be a real useful diaper?

TIA!

Re: Advice on prefolds?

  • Flats are less expensive. And you can fold them to fit any size. Double them up, or tuck in one or two of your infant prefolds to boost absorbency.
  • FWIW, DS is 2.5 years old and somewhere between 25-30 lbs and we can still Snappi red edge prefolds on him.

I know there are a few other good brands but I'll let people who have direct experience with them tell you about them.

  • I don't have personal experience with GMD prefolds, but I often see people posting in other brand reviews that they wish they had spent the few extra dollars for GMD. I'm curious if anyone has another secret love too!

  • GMD for the win! I have a few flats but DH prefers prefolds (?!?!) and he changes her more than me when he is home so...
    Thanks all!

  • Following for more information here. A couple of you ladies suggested me getting some prefolds or flats with covers to supplement my NB stash. I bought a bunch of stuff to make my own covers and am looking for more info on prefolds/ flats!

  • @AFwifelife‌ I guess I'm looking to know which brands are the best for durability and cost, how many of what sizes, etc.

  • So if I went with about 24 size 1osocozys to supplement my stash of 12 NB grovias, id probably be able to use them past the NB stage?

  • I would get flats or gmd smalls

    Is this to me?
If so, I was hoping to skip small. She is already 12 lbs and I would hate to invest in a size that won't last long. Is it conceivable that I use my NB to get me to med?

  • My ds2 dropped down to 5lbs8oz after birth so he was (and still is) a tiny guy. I have 6 Bummis preemie prefolds and I still have 6 of the 12 yellow edge Osocozy prefolds from his nb days. They are making excellent doublers in my flats now that he can outpee a single flat......just saying that you can get extra use out of the little prefolds even after they have outgrown the prefolds so don't let fear of not getting much use out of nb sized prefolds during the nb period stop you from buying them.

We moved to red edge around 12-13 lbs. mostly due to DS outgrowing the rise. They were a bit bulky at first but if you don't mind that you probably could go straight to the GMD mediums at this point. The yellows would be a good length for trifolding and laying in a cover, or for stuffing pockets for a while, so if that is something you want to do, they are worth having for that.
  • I used GMD newborn prefolds I bought used but I couldn't get other sizes used and shipping to Canada costs a fortune frim GMD so buying them new wasn't an option. I use Sweet Pea brand infant and baby (basically small and medium/large size) and I am very happy with them. They are slightly less $CND than GMD, so a bit of savings and I like them just as much as the GMD newborn prefolds I had. They are very soft.
That said, GMD have excellent resale, I'm sure I won't have trouble reselling my Sweet Pea ones, but again, you would have no trouble unloading GMD prefolds so the extra cost isn't really an issue because of that fact.
I also use flats and love them!

  • @MapleMomma I used the Indian Prefolds from Nicki's in Infant (4x8x4) for our NB stash.

I knew she wouldn't be in them long and I didn't plan to resell them since we'll use them for doublers or rags.  They've held up really well so far.  The width is the same as the GMD Newborn but they are 3 inches longer; we just folded them down in the back to start.  Now at nearly 7 weeks and almost 12 pounds she's outgrowing the width.  We can still Snappi them but they're tight.
