Should we let our toddler sleep in bed with us just this once?

Sorry for the long ass title. Phew!

Abywho. Our little two year old man has a freakin 104.5 degree fever. I was literally on the interstate on our way to Vanderbilt when our ped called us back and said you don't have to take him in, go home treat it with Motrin/Tylenol and bring him in the morning. She said only take him
In if the fever is still that high 2 hour after medication. Ugh I don't know. I wanted to take him, and I still may if it goes back up but she was right, it has gone down with the first dose of Motrin.

Anyways, I'm considering putting him in the big bed with us just this once, so we can all sleep better. We slept in the same bed in CO and when we travel sometimes but otherwise he sticks to his bed only.

What do y'all think? Am I opening up a nasty can of worms by doing this just once? Will he want this every night? Can anyone read into our future? Get your 8 balls out lol.

  • Thanks!! We live right outside of Franklin/Brentwood area!

  • My 2 year old sleeps with us sometimes, but he still likes his own bed. I wouldn't worry too much about it if he is still in a crib. If he's in a toddler bed it may be a little harder, but it just depends on the kiddo. I would let him sleep with me if I was in your shoes either way.
  • I think I will if he will even do it.

He tends to think our bed is party time. Sick or not. He's here now we are watching frozen. I'm hoping he will fall asleep. Poor dude.

104 seems soooo high to me.
  • If he'll sleep in your bed, I'd allow it. Especially with a high fever!!

My little guy likes his own space so it wouldn't work for us but sometimes I wish he would!

  • We had this scenario earlier this week.  He had the flu, and it was easier to keep him with us, than to guess how he was doing.

He lasted until midnight, woke up and asked for his crib.

    I don't/didn't think 1 night would hurt.

  • My 7 yr old crawls into my bed like half the nights. I don't see a problem wit it but you can keep close eye on him
  • Hey! I live in the same area :) My girls can be sick as a dog or soooo tired and if we allow them in the bed they wake right up and refuse to go to sleep. One time won't hurt though if he is sick and will actually sleep. Hope he starts to feel better!

This. This exactly with my ds. It is impossible to sleep with him. If the little guy ever has a near-death illness, I'll just bring him into bed with me and suddenly he'll be fine and ready to rock and roll with elmo.

That said, yes. Let him sleep with you tonight. You can monitor his fever without having to get up and stalk him every 30 minutes. It might make things difficult for a day or two, but it is one of those times when it is ok to break the rules.
  • When my husband was away a few days (and nights) for work, DS had come down with a fever. He didn't manage to fall asleep in his own room and I allowed him to sleep in the big bed with me... but, that just didn't work at all! He just kept turning and tossing. So, in the end, I dragged his crib into our bedroom, pulled the crib all the way up to my side of the bed, put DS back in his crib, put my hand through the bars and we slept hand in hand like babies for the rest of the night!

I allow my DD to sleep on our floor sometimes when she's sick or has a bad dream. We set her sleeping bag up and she loves it because she is in the same room, and we love it because she isn't in our bed tossing and turning all night.
  • Yes I would. I've quit worrying about instilling bad sleep habits, do what you need to do to get through emit he night!

  • He is and isn't. We made it to a clinic this morning..... Of course he was running around and talking to everyone.... Acting totally fine lol!

But he did have a high fever. We are going to monitor him and do the Advil/Tylenol regiments and if it's not better by Monday she wants him to have his foot pricked for bacterial infection. :(.

He has been sick off and on for almost two straight months. I am starting to wonder if my sever sickness is stressing him out? Seeing mama puke all day...not able to touch my right arm bc of the PICC line.... I hope not anyways. It's just weird, normally he is healthy for a toddler!
