Do I still need to wake to feed?

Hi Ladies,

My 2 week old has already reached his birthweight.  He was 7lbs. 13 oz. at birth and at 11 days he weighed in at 8 lbs.  I am still waking him to feed at night because he would sleep all night long if I let him.  The pedi said I can let him sleep a 4 hour stretch at night but he is too young to not be eating the entire night.  Anyway, my question is for during the day.  I was waking him every 2 hours to eat but sometimes he will take a 2 hour nap during the day so it's been every 3 hours to nurse.  Should I still be feeding him every 2 hours during the day or can I let him set the pace for daytime feeds?

Re: Do I still need to wake to feed?

  • At 2 weeks old having surpassed his birth weight, I would not go longer than 2-3 hours during the day to nurse and not wake at night. As long as baby is otherwise healthy, he'll wake to eat in the MOTN when he's hungry. I doubt he'll sleep all night but if you can get 6 hours out of him-take it!

  • I go by the motto of never wake a sleeping baby....but maybe that's just me.
  • I did every 3 hrs during the day and whatever DS wanted at night. The every three hours during the day stopped around 2.5-3 months when DS fell into a somewhat predictable schedule.
