Need advice...
My boyfriend and I are having our first baby in Feb, 2015. He will automatically be enrolled under BOTH of our insurance plans. Mine will be the primary insurance because my birthday falls in May and the daddy's birthday is in July. Our plan after the first 30 days is to enroll our son under his fathers insurance... Daddy works for the State and has a great benefit plan... his insurance will not go up and our only costs will be small copays when our son visits the doctor.
My insurance is a High Deductible Plan. I am currently on an individual plan with a $1500 deductible that I have JUST met. It rolls into its new year in August rather than following the calendar year. Because my policy said that my pregnancy/birth/hospital stay, etc would be 100% covered after my deductible was met, I was under the mistaken impression that my son would actually be under MY plan for the first 30 days. However, in reality, his birth will instantly and automatically switch me from an individual plan to a family plan for the 30 days he is on both of our insurances. Which means that my deductible will double to $3000 from the time he is born. I understand this to mean that any hospital bills I accrue would be owed by me until the higher deductible is met (another $1500 to meet the higher $3000 amount). This seems unfair, given that our intent is to put him on his fathers insurance.
It doesn't seem like we have the option to make fathers insurance primary. However, according to my providers, I can opt him out of my insurance coverage for the first 30 days and just have him under his fathers, thereby keeping my plan an Individual Plan. This cannot be done in advance... it would require me announcing it to the Hospital upon my arrival during labor. But I am worried that this could upset the fathers insurance company, as mine was supposed to be the primary provider for that period. We are in the process of looking into the impact of this change with his insurance company.
Would it be safer to suck it up and just assume that I am out another $1500 at the birth of my child???
Has anyone else had this sort of issue in dealing with two insurance companies? If so, what did you do?
