Irish boy name spelling opinion!! TIA! :)

Hi all! First baby due 2/20 and we finally have a name picked out, we just both disagree on the spelling. Which looks better/will be easier to pronounce?

Lochlainn vs. Lochlann?
Pronounced Lock-Lynn

My husband wants Lochlainn because I guess that's the "traditional" Irish spelling and Lochlann is the Scottish spelling. Whatever, he won't even look Irish! Lol. His middle name will be Patrick.

Which one?! I'm tempted to let the spelling be Lochlainn just because it's a difference of 1 letter, but just thinking of future spelling or pronounciation issues.

Thank you!

  • I visually prefer Lochlann but if it's important to your DH, go with the traditional spelling.

  • I think the pronunciation and reception of each spelling would be dependent on the area you live in. For example, I'm from Florida and read Lochlainn as lock lane but read Lochlann more the way it should be pronounced.

  • Irish spellings confuse the heck out of me, but the names are so pretty!  I would go with the slightly easier one, just because he is probably going to have to spell out his name alot and its marginally  less work :)
  • I'd go with Lachlan. And so does auto correct!

  • I was curious so I went on behindthename.com... Lachlann and Lachlainn are both the Irish spellings, while Lauchlan and Lachlan are the Scottish spellings.

Basically, I think you´re good with going with either. I personally would go for Lachlann since people are so bad at pronouncing Irish vowel sounds.
I agree with @holachicaa. Just to throw another variation for you to consider though, I have taught an Irish boy who spelled his name as "Lochlan".

  • I'm a Scottish/Irish girl and although all of the above spellings can work in terms of their ethnic heritage Lochlan wins for me simply because the double n seems unnecessary and more common in the spelling of girls names in the world we live in today, alla "-lynn" everything which I already have a natural aversion to (even considering FI's DD's name contains this overused suffix).

  • I'm Irish and I'd go for Lochlann (for me, this is the "correct" spelling, I'd go into details but I wouldn't want to bore you :))
  • Thanks, ladies!!!
  • Lachlan

    Keep it simple!

I'm Irish and there have been a lot of bad spellings made up probably due to Guinness, Middleton and paddy...
