Baby Names

Could these names make a come back?

I was reading what the top names of the 1880s were.

These are a few of the ones that didn't survive like Mary or Katherine.

Nellie/Nell
Hattie
Blanche
Effie
Sallie/Sally
Lottie
Nannie
Birdie
Winifred/Winnie
Flossie

Do you see a comeback for any of these names?

Side note, I noticed "ie" endings were pretty trendy!

Re: Could these names make a come back?

  • I know a little girl named Sally. Brother is Jasper.

I think Effie and Nell are cute and could be used.

I could see Hattie and Blanche making a comeback too.

    Not sure about the rest.

  • Comeback...? No. I don't see them becoming the next Hazel/Ruby/Violet. But I'm sure some of them will be used, especially since many of them are nickname-ish: Charlotte/Lottie, Elenor/Nell, Bridget/Birdie.

  • Nellie/Nell - eh... I don't think so.
Hattie - making a come back!
    Blanche - possible
    Effie - maybe
Sallie/Sally - it could, still not very popular
Lottie - definitely as a nickname for Charlotte
    Nannie - no.
    Birdie - I hope not.
    Winifred/Winnie - I could see it happening
    Flossie - definitely not
  • I would use Nell in a heartbeat

I would use Harriet with the NN Hattie

Besides that I am not really a fan of any of them.

I feel like I know a ton of Katherines/ Catherines (that are children and babies).

I personally know one baby named Mary, and it was on my list when I was pregnant with DD.

I love Sally as a NN for Sarah, and I sort of dig Blanche.

I like Sally, Nell and Blanche.

I feel like any name can make a come back, if you had a character on a popular TV show or a celebrity baby with one of these names I can see it getting popular.

  • Yes, unfortunately
  • I wanted to name my first kid Winnie Iove that name and it reminds me of the wonder years. I've heard Hattie often enough but that's about it out of that last.
  • Nell or Nellie could be a nn for Penelope.

There's also the singer Nelly Furtado.

  • I think a lot of those are nicknames, actually.

    Nellie/Nell is short for Ellen
    Lottie is for Charlotte
Hattie is a nn for Henrietta
    Nannie is short for Ann
    Sally is short for Sarah/Sara

If you look at the longer versions of these names, many of them are still popular -- it's just the nns that have passed out of style.
High School English teacher and mom of 2 kids:

    DD, born 9/06/00 -- 12th grade
    DS, born 8/25/04 -- 7th grade
  • Winifred is cute with nn Winnie. I have always loved Flossie,( but would never use it.) Flossie was a character in a book I read as a child and have loved the name since then.... But I LOVE it. P.S. I also love Midge (Barbie's best friend) the same way that I love Flossie.
  • Nellie/Nell - not for a while
Hattie - I think this one is already making its way up the charts
Blanche - doubtful, but it's kind of cute
Effie - maybe due to the character in the Hunger Games series
Sallie/Sally - I feel like this is one of those names that so many dogs have that idk how many humans will keep using it LOL! That's how I am with it anyway that and Lacy
Lottie - I can see it - it seems like it has the structure for popularity
    Nannie - doubtful
    Birdie - doubtful
Winifred/Winnie - Jimmy Fallon's first kid is Winnie - so I can see it gaining some popularity, I really like it but H doesn't
    Flossy - doubtful
  • Obviously it depends where you live as to whether or not the names survived. Lottie, Flossie, Sally, Nellie, and Blanche are all common enough where I'm from. Although mostly these names are on people 30-90. I haven't met many kids (other than Sallys and Nellies).

I love some of these names!
  • I love Blanche! I hope it doesn't make a comeback!
  • First pg, DH and I loved Charlotte (nn Lottie).  The nn first came from "Phantom of the Opera."

I don't like that Charlotte is so popular now (lots of friend's kids named this) but still love this classic name.

  • A lot of these are already used as NNs.
Nellie/Nell - I've seen Nell on a Blog, girl is probably 3 or 4 now
Hattie - probably most used out of this list
Blanche - Not sure if it'll get really popular but I think it's cute
Effie - I know a 20 year old named this
    Sallie/Sally - I don't like it
    Lottie - NN for Charlotte
    Nannie - I don't like it
Birdie - love this as a NN for Beatrice
Winifred/Winnie - Winnie is so adorable!
Flossie - No idea what this is short for, don't like it
  • A lot of them never really went away here in the UK, and you certainly hear them more now as they make a bigger comeback

  • I think Effie could because it sounds so similar to Ella & Ellie. Winnie is already back. I know a baby & Jimmy Fallon named his daughter Winnie.
