Pregnant after a Loss

HSG test!

my OB doctor suggested me getting an HSG test today after my first cycle.

Can I get some input please. if anyone got this test done- please give me some advice.

I am doing the test because I had a ectopic pregancy 3 weeks ago. We are waiting for my first period to come before the test. I have heard, per my doctor----- that feritilty will actually increase after the test.

Did this happen to you?

My husband was actually the one that brought up that question. He was actually a miracle baby after his mother had 3 EP's, she had the HsG test done in the 80's and was pregant 3 weeks later with my husband :)

Just some input I am looking for on the HSG test and any advice really that could be helpful.
I heard taking pain meds prior to the test also will help out!

Thanks ladies
Megan

Definitely take some ibuprofen or whatever beforehand. I'm not going to lie, my HSG was pretty painful. Some people have no problems with it, though.

Careful with reading too much into the statistics about being more fertile. Some of that  might have to do with the fact that a lot of people start fertility treatments after getting an HSG. I had mine in July, and it took two medicated IUI cycles before I got pregnant in November.

  • I didn't find it at all uncomfortable. I think I took Tylenol, like they recommended. Had some slight cramping but it was over in a blink. You will have your results right away, or at least I did. As for the increased fertility, that was not us. I did start Clomid w/IUI the cycle after but was a poor responder to the Clomid (PCOS).
  • I had a uterine septum and can only speak to the fact that pain meds or some anti anxiety meds are essential. It may have been worse for me because the septum didn't allow the balloon to expand very much. I can't speak to the fertility issue. Good luck.

  • I have not had a hsg, but as for the increased fertility I agree with @BethKate2‌ that some of it has to attribute to fert treatments commonly being started after this test.

Also, this test checks for tubal blockages and sometimes will clear a blockage or open the tube up, thus increasing fertility.

Take it all with a grain of salt.

  • I had an hsg test and got pregnant that cycle. I took a heafty dose of ibuprofen prior to and just felt some cramping after. For me it wasn't painful the cramping was tolerable. I ended up being allergic to the contrast dye so that kinda sucked. Good luck!
  • Take pain meds. Seriously it was the most physically painful expereince I have ever had and I didn't have any blockages. (Did i mention i have had 18 kidney stones and this was way worse?) I almost passed out. They told me it would feel like period cramps. It was so much worse for me. Also as far as it making you more fertile it didn't for me. It was almost a year later before i got pregnant. But I have PCOS and do not ovulate without metformin. Good luck and take a person to drive you home just in case you have a painful esperience like I did. I hope you are one of the ones that has no issues with it but better to be on the safe side.

I didn't mention this is my reply on TTCAL because I wasn't sure if it was appropriate. With my most recent loss, we conceived the same cycle I had my HSG so, I'm a believer that it boosts fertility. I had not started any fertility treatments yet so we were shocked! But... nothing guarantees a rainbow.
  • Good luck with the hsg. As PP have said I think the increase in fertility comes from clearing out previously blocked tube(s) which allows the egg to get to the uterus easily. I hope this is the case for you. Best of luck!

  • Didn't do anything for me after my ectopic, unfortunately, but I didn't find it all that painful. A couple of advil in the morning (this is when the doctors still let me take advil, so check with yours).

    Good luck!

  • For me the HSG was no more uncomfortable than a pap.  I did conceive the same cycle as my HSG, but I also was treated for lining issues with estrace, a trigger shot, and progesterone supps after O so most likely my increased fertility was due to the meds and not the HSG.
