Girl Name Help Please!

Okay - so when I was pregnant with my son, all I could think about was how much BETTER girl names were than boy names. I had my heart set on Emmerson for a girl (I know, I know) and now that I'm pregnant with a girl, I'm stumped.

Background...our son's name is Lu.ca. We have an Italian last name (4 syllables) that is also a Spanish last name. My husband's first name is pretty waspy.

His number 1 girl name is (and has been) Sloan(e). I know it isn't a favourite here but I think it is pretty cool myself.

My number 1 girl name is (currently) Serafina. However, as much as I love it, I worry that it is too pretty (is that weird to say?). I've never been into the really really pretty names for some reason, but I do like that it is a nice Italian name (and that this spelling is Italian/Spanish/Polish which works with all of our backgrounds) and the nn Sera is cool IMO.

So...thoughts?

Sloan(e)?
Serafina?

Middle name suggestions? I think mn for Serafina has to be short given that first and last name would each be 4 syllables.

Please and thank you!!

  • I love Sloane.

I think Serafina is lovely, but I get what you mean about "too pretty", and I am usually turned off by overly femme/ frilly names as well.

  • Personally, I love Sloane, but it's definitely not a favorite here.
  • I LOVE Serafina! I also love the nn Sera to shorten such a big name down or a kid. She can always go by her full name if she wants to when she's older.

    Sloane...meh. It's nms.

  • I find Sloane to be harsh and unappealing. I think Serafina is lovely and feminine. And Sera works as a nn that isn't too much. If you don't love either of these names though keep looking.
  • Love Serafina!!!!! It's on my list as well

    Serafina Jane
    Serafina Pearl
    Serafina Nicole
    Serafina Noelle
    Serafina Jolie

  • I love Serafina so much. If I could get MH on board it would be in my top few girl names. Do it!

  • I love Serafina, it is so beautiful. Sloane is nice but Serafina is gorgeous and goes great with Luca.

  • If I had to choose between the two, I would pick Sloane (Serafina is also very girly for me).

To offer up some Spanish/Italian ideas: Pia, Mia, Inez, Noelia, Belén, Carmen, Giuliana, Lucia (too close to your son's name, I think), Mikaela (NN Mika), Lourdes (NN Lola), Gemma

  • I love Serafina nn Sera. I don't personally find it overly frilly. I think it sounds like a strong name:)
With Sloane, all I can think of is Arvin Sloane from Alias!
  • I much prefer Serafina.

Love PP's suggestion of Serafina Inez!

  • Serafina if I had to chose. Sloane a very harsh and unattractive to me.
  • Can I just bump my own thread for more advice or do I have to start a new one?

Anyway- my husband has added to the list with two names that have 'issues' for me.

He loves Isla (which I think may be getting too popular) and Mila (which is also quite popular, though I actually love it, but my good good friend has said she is going to name her future daughter that as it is a family name).

So I was trying to think of similar names and all I came up with is Mira. Like Mira Sorvino.

    Thoughts?

To recap: here is the list now:

    Serafina
    Sloane
    Isla
    Mila
    Mira

Reminder - 4 syllable Italian last name.

    Thanks girls. Appreciate the help!!

  • Serafina is still my favourite. Isla and Mila are both nice (I only know of one Isla where I'm from, I don't think it's overly popular)
  • I like Isla and Mila, and it seems like he likes feminine names with the -la sound at the end, however I feel like they are all a little matchy with your son's name.  Even Mira seems a little much since it's two syllable ending with that same -ah sound.

I'm personally a big fan of the -ila names (Aurelia, Cecelia, etc.)  Would those work for you or to they fall in to the Serafina "too pretty" trap?

  • I want to love Serafina but I can't. Sloane sounds feminine and spunky. I like it!

I hadn't really thought about it being too matchy matchy with my son (Luca). Hmm...food for thought, for sure.

I will look into other names with -ila at the end. They are quite nice (though Aurelia and Cecelia aren't for me...). Thank you!

  • I know a little girl named Eda ( Eee-da) it is a german/polish name according to her mother. I want to like Sloane.....it just sounds heavy. How is Serafina pronounced? Like Sarah-feena? Sear-a-feena?
  • Sloane is my fav of the two choices.
