Recs for grow - into toys?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a grow - into/build on toy? We have a gazillion cars that DS 1 will only like for so long, that I'd love to recommend go the eager grandparents a toy that will get use now, but which my two boys can get mileage out of for awhile and we can add too. Maybe like a train set? Any BTDT recs would be great!

    I know it is a bigger gift, but we got DD a kitchen set when she was about this age, and it has entertained her for two years and counting.  (DS loves it too.)  And you can add on by getting more food, dishes, a tea set, etc.

    Magnatiles -- DS1 loves them (4 yrs old) but they are fun for DS2 to play with at this age as well

          DS1: Quinn - 10.22.10 and DS2: Cole - 01.18.13
