Pregnant after 35

Sleep issues? Meds?

I am 15 weeks today. I've been having a really really hard time sleeping at night. I can fall asleep very very easily but I always wake up and once I wake up I have a really hard time getting back to sleep.  I usually cuddle with the kids in our 'big bed' as they call it. lol So maybe half hour before it's time for them to go to bed.. they like to lay in our bed and read books or watch tv or both and I almost always fall asleep toward the end of that half hour!  I get them to bed.. lay back down and I'll fall asleep immediately.  But midnight.. 1am.. I'm up and I'll be up for HOURS!  Last night I was up from midnight until 2am.. again at 4am until 5am.  The night before that I was up from 11pm until 4am.. literally could not fall back asleep. Tv on.. tv off.. nothing worked.  My new OB gave me a packet of information like they always do and it has a list of meds on it.. it says you can take tylenol PM.   I've heard mixed things about it.  I've heard it's fine and then I've heard it's not fine.  Just curious what your opinions are?

I took it last night because all the info I had said it was ok to use.  But I almost feel more tired right now.  :(  I think it knocked me out but it still did not prevent me from waking several times last night and I still don't think I had a good nights sleep.

I'm dying!!  I really need some rest but nothing seems to be working. Any ideas?

Re: Sleep issues? Meds?

  • I find Tylenol PM to have a hangover effect if you don't take it super early in the night (and if you take a whole dose). I haven't taken it during pregnancy but I have been using Unisom. A whole Unisom has the same hangover effect but half is perfect! The nights I take it I sleep through for the most part (with maybe one bathroom break) the other nights I'm up at 4 and can't go back to sleep.
  • My doctor wrote me an Rx for Ambien. Says its fine to take while pregnant and it realy works!

  • Tylenol pm and plain benedryl is fine to. Take. I prefer benedryl although makes you really drowsy. I'm having same issues, not staying asleep even though exhausted. :( good luck..

  • I've been taking Unisom. Still wake up to pee sometimes, but get right back to sleep. Does make it more difficult to get up in the morning.

  • "@"Bostonchelle that's exactly how I felt when I've taken it.  Like really drowsy and kind of weird the next day. maybe it's that I took it too late.

I cannot do benedry. It has the opposite effect on me. I get like restless. I tried that with my last pregnant and I had like restless leg syndrome! I could not stop moving! It was awful. lol

    Thanks ladies!

  • Well that's good to know. I did not know that. I don't get restless on tylenol PM but I do feel groggy in the morning sometimes.

  • Melatonin. Herbal medication in lieu of an ambien works wonders. Take 1 hr before you want to go to bed. But ask your doctor first, as with anything if its okay for you.
