Weak gag reflex

I am sort of at a loss...pedi says this is normal for some babies, weight gain is fine, and we just have to work through it, but I am curious what has worked for you.

DD has done fine on purées through stage 2. When we moved to stage 3 she started crying a lot when we feed her, and gags if we put more than a half (baby) spoonful in her mouth...sometimes even if we do limit the amount.

I want to do more table food but she has choked on puffs and gagged hard enough to throw up on the stage 3 stuff a couple of times. Pedi says it is a weak gag reflex. For those of you who did BLW or are on lots of table foods, what did you start with? How do you make sure they get enough? Until she stops gagging/choking completely I'm not comfortable putting a whole plate in front of her, because she will just keep stuffing her mouth until she chokes (happened once with the puffs).

TIA!

Re: Weak gag reflex

  • Good idea @mamatoosh‌, we will try that. Thanks for the ideas so far!

  • I was going to say the same thing about bigger food. Ds refused everything until we gave him pizza crust to gnaw on. He didn't really eat much of it but it flipped the mental switch for him and he now loves table food. I hope she grows out of that soon
  • I second the idea to go bigger. Think French fry size. Some ideas are baked sweet potato and boiled carrots. Ds used to love steamed broccoli and that has a built in handle!

  • Thanks for the ideas.  We have started trying more table food and the Stage 3 stuff is going a little better!  I wonder if some of it is taste too.  She tends to do fine with pasta and turkey but not chicken or beef.  Maybe we have a vegetarian on our hands.  DH would die!
