Water

Has anyone given their little one water via a sippy cup? Not sure when you start that and how often you offer it to them in addition to breastfeeding/bottle and food. I've heard good things about a sippy cup called the zoli cup- you can buy it on amazon. Anyone had experience with it or have any other suggestions?

  • We give water via straw cup with every meal. I was told to offer water with starting solids. DS gets no more than 2oz a day

I've read that you can start offering a couple of oz once they start eating solids but that for now, it's still mostly just for learning rather than true need.

ETA we've tried the soppy cup once so far. Poor LO had no clue what to do with it.

  • We have the zoli bot cup and we LOVE it! I got it because DD was showing interest in our cups and glasses. One night at a restaurant I let her try to drink a sip of water through the straw of my water glass and she did it! She got the hang of the zoli bot cup the first try. I give a little water with solids occasionally, juice, or breast milk. Some does dribble out her mouth if she tries to take a big sip, but not so much that I worry about wasting milk.

  • Ds gets water from a shot glass when he's offered solids. Most of it he wears. So an ounce or two in total for the day.
  • DD loves water and all cups. We offer water at every meal - I have a sippy but she's only interested in using my stemless wine glasses - go figure. I think its because she can see the liquid. I probably offer her a sip 5x throughout a meal.

  • We also give about an ounce in a sippy or straw cup when she's eating. We've been doing that since she started solids. She mostly just drinks a few sips.

  • Okay- stupid question but when you all day solid foods- puréed food=solid food, right?
  • I have offered LO some formula in a sippy cup. I read on the hand out from my pediatrician that we should use formula in the sippy cup so she doesn't associate the formula with a bottle only.

Yes, solids=anything that isn't BM or formula

  • I asked about that at her 6 month apt and our doctor said we could offer it if we wanted to but said dd is getting plenty of water through BM. She said probably more around 9 months to start giving it regularly, but won't hurt her if we wanted to now. We got dd a pink water bottle (package said for 9 month olds and older) because she loves mine but still haven't put anything in it yet.

  • Our pedi recommended water to try to help with constipation, but I've just given him a bottle so far.

  • We give water with solids, but just a few sips (maybe an ounce per meal?) and from a glass. DS seems to prefer the glass over the sippy.
  • We offer about an ounce in the sraw cup so DS can get the hang of it. He doesn't get much out though. However, he's very, very interested in drinking from our cups; no straw necessary. I let him drink water from my cup, with me holding the cup of course, and he LOVES it; so now I'm on the hunt for something baby (read: spill proof) friendly, that isn't sippy or straw.

I've heard good things about the Wow cup. It's a spill proof regular drinking cup

This and our pedi said no more than an oz per age in months, so he could have up to 6 ounces a day right now with solids. However he usually just sips a few times and makes an adorable icky face when the water hits his mouth. :)

  • I give him a sippy cup of water with solids just for practice and he's starting to get the hang of it. He likes the Nuby cup the best. Mainly he just chews on it though.
  • She doesnt drink water regularly but since she forgot how to use a straw she learned how to drink normally from a cup if I hold it for her. She doesnt dribble too much. If I think of it I will give her a few sips of water.

  • We have the Zoli cup and DS loves it! He loves water too. I give him his cup during his solid food breakfast and lunch. He mastered the straw very quickly. Water is helping with his constipation.
  • DS is pretty good with the sippy as long as it is full. He doesn't get the whole tipping it forward thing. We offer it with dinner but he mostly likes to chew on it and sometimes acts surprised when something comes out. Our pedi also said we could try water in a bottle during the MOTN to try to wean from feedibg. Only tried it once and didn't really help.
  • DS's favorite way to drink water is out of a tervis tumbler with a lid, although he usually ends up with more of it all over himself than in his mouth.

We use a small Tervis too. Or a stemless wine glass. DD LOVES it but we only give her a few sips. I will probably start giving her a little more after reading this. I need to increase the solids I'm giving her too I think.
