Breastfeeding

Right Side not Responding to Pump

Background - DS is 4-months, nurses 5/6 am, bottles at 9, 12, & 3, nurses at 6 and 9 pm.  So 3-4 nursing and 3 bottles per day.  He has always been a good sleeper (knock on wood) and usually will sleep from a feeding at 8:30/9 pm until 5/6 am.  If he feeds at 5 am I usually try to top him off before I leave the house at 7:30 so he isn't due to eat as soon as he gets to daycare (DH drops off).

Problem/Question - I pump three times at work and recently my right side has not been responding to the pump (Medela PISA, new).  Letdown occurs within the first minute and then I might get a trickle from the right breast.  I just pumped for 40-minutes and got 1-ounce.  There is definitely still milk in there - I will probably go home engorged and in pain, just waiting to feed DS.  Left side has been a little slow as well, but I think that was just stress as it always emptied.

I've replaced the membranes, tried different pump speeds, watching video of the baby, and today I brought my laptop from home so I could watch television.  Not sure what else to do or what might be wrong.  This is my second child, I nursed the first until he weaned at 13-months and would like to do the same for this son.  Any advice?  Not sure what to do and I'd like to avoid mastitis/painful engorgement/screwing my supply.  TIA.

Re: Right Side not Responding to Pump

  • I wonder if there is something up with your pump. I think someone else on this board mentioned in the last couple of days that their pump was screwy and they got a new one and suddenly their production jumped. Do you have a manual or can you get one to try that and see if that works?

That would be my guess since you replaced the membranes and such. Maybe try calling Medela since it is a new pump - see if they will replace?

  • Try doing compression while you pump. It helps a lot on my dud side.

  • Thanks.  I ordered a larger flange and am checking into pump issues.
