Tailbone Pain

I have posted about this before when I was about 18 weeks. But now it is unbearable.

Is anyone else suffering from coccyx (tailbone) pain? I sit at a desk all day for work and only get up and walk around to go to break room, bathroom, printer etc. I asked my OB about the pain and she pretty much just said "yup, it sucks, sit on a pillow" :(

Should I be concerned this may impede on delivery or anything? What are some of you doing to ease the pain?

thanks ladies :(

  • My tailbone has hurt immensely from about week 12 on. I thought I injured myself that's how bad it hurts. Things that have helped me: stretching (lay on my back on the floor and twist my leg over opposite sides), laying down @ the end of the day with my feet propped up, making sure I sleep with my legs propped up, and unfortunately - sucking it up. Really there isn't much you can do but little things to tolerate it and know it'll be over soon. A friend has recommended a chiropractor but I haven't gone so not sure if that'd help or not.
  • I'm confused as to the difference between tailbone pain and back pain. I have some pretty awful pain (sorry if TMI but it's the best way to describe it) right above the start of my butt crack. I too sit at a desk all day long and hardly get up or get to walk anywhere besides up and down the hallway or around the break room. I mentioned it to my OB at my last appointment and she set me up for PT. We'll see if it works. I also was gifted a prenatal massage and had it on Friday....omg...loved it! It really helped with the pain, it's not gone, but it helped.

This can be normal as your ligaments and muscles relax due to the hormone relaxin. A lot of it can be based on posture as well. A slight tilt in your sacram can put pressure on your coccyx. If anything shifts, which it may, then it can cause discomfort in pelvis or illium. I had landed in my tailbone pre pregnancy causing a tilt. With the pressure of the baby and relaxing of my muscles I started experiencing discomfort and pain in my tailbone. Consciously sit up and keep both feet flat on the ground. Maintaining a neutral spine without slouching helps align everything. A birthing ball is very good with helping you build your core muscles and maintain your posture. It is also a good idea to find a chiropractor that is trained and certified in the Webster's Technique. My chiropractor is amazing. I see her every other week up until my final month of pregnancy. Then I will see her every week. This will help keep everything in place and the Webster's Technique has been proven to assist with breeched babies. I sure hope you can find something to help you start feeling better. I completely understand the discomfort.
  • @mirigirl‌ thanks, glad to have sorted that out. Boo, you're experiencing it too. :(

  • I'm with you on the pain! Looking forward to not having it, hang in there mommy
  • I've had a little bit of this, and it sucks.  I'm sorry you seem to have it pretty bad.  I totally agree with the exercise ball advice, or if you can't have an exercise ball at your desk (I used to meet with a lot of clients and looked a little ridiculous on one of those), they make little inflatable disc things that are supposed to do the same thing.  Like this.  https://www.amazon.com/ProSource-Diameter-Balance-Cushion-Exercise/dp/B00DYA3FIM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1418308976&sr=8-3&keywords=inflatable+disc+cushion  or a tailbone cushion - like this
Hope you get some relief!  Chiropractor has helped with a lot of my aches and pains too.
