Anyone have birth disappointment?

Anyone here dealing with birth disappointment? I received prenatal care at Mountain Midwifery, and had planned on a natural out of hospital delivery. They sent me for a medical induction after a NST that was in the grey area, and I was in labor for multiple days. MMW has been gracious enough to correspond with me via E-mail, to further explain my reason for induction.

Just now, one of the midwives admitted that my tracings pattern on my NST (reassuring but non-reactive) would be of no concern in the hospital, that I would just need continuous monitoring that they do not provide in the birth center. So, I was induced for no reason!! I should have been transferred out to a hospital instead of induced, according to MMW! I'm upset, I trusted them to limit my interventions. I understand that medical interventions save lives in birth, but I am upset that my dreams were tossed out the window without reason, by a birth center that has a reputation for having a natural mindset.

While this looks like a rant, and I guess it mostly is, I am wondering if anyone else had birth disappointment of some sort, and what you did about it. Any books you read, or anything?

I don't know I would say this is a disappointment in the end, because things are getting better, but BOY did my recovery get complicated. I delivered by c-section at 32 weeks six days, and baby boy came out of it thriving. Mama, not so much. I ended up with a terrible hematoma and my a dehiscence in my incision (basically the incision opened up). Neither of these were anyone's fault, but it's made for a frustrating, difficult recovery. Pain and extra doctors visits for me when all I want to do is be with my son. So that has definitely been disappointing!

I was hoping for a natural water birth through the Center for Midwifery delivering at University hospital, but baby boy turned posterior (after my water had already broken) and I couldn't handle the pain by the time I was 4cm. I tried starting with nitrous first so I could still have my water birth, but they didn't have it hooked up right and it did nothing to take the edge off. By then, I was screaming for the epidural and was at 6cm by the time it was given to me and set in. Labor progressed quickly, but baby's heart rate plummeted once I had the epidural, turning his birth into quite a stressful ordeal. Every time I pushed his heart rate dropped. Our labor was quickly turned over to the OBs who had no idea about my preferred birth plan. They were also missing important equipment in our room to get an accurate read on his heartbeat. They were so close to doing a c section, but I kept asking for another chance to push. They tried helping with suction, then an episiotomy (without even asking me first), and after an hour of pushing he was finally here. I'm coping with his stressful entrance, but just so grateful to have a healthy baby in my arms. They left a large scar on his head that was pooled with blood underneath the skin, and made him stay in NICU for 24 hours. Because he started his life in NICU, it messed with breastfeeding and resulted in me being practically forced into giving him donor milk. I was heartbroken that the first milk he received wasn't mine, but in the end it was helpful because it gave him the energy to learn how to latch on to me. His head is now fully healed and he is breastfeeding like a champ! I definitely won't be going this route again if I decide to have another child!!!

Wow, sorry for your experience. I was in the same hospital, and a researcher that had no reason to be in during my exam walked in to ask me questions during a vaginal exam. I was totally exposed, and my CNM didn't even care. Do you plan to birth in a different hospital next time?

That is so frustrating and embarrassing! I think they get so jaded by the process that they forget this isn't something we do everyday like them, and it is very sensitive and personal. I was so adamant about not having male doctors, but by the time I delivered there were over 15 people in my room. I feel just shy of being a hooker, so many people have seen my unmentionables!!!

I think we might look into Sky Ridge next time. We have heard how nice the facility is...however I'm still concerned about their medical intervention stats. I liked at least having the option to start off with a midwife at University....hoping next time we won't need doctors. How about you? What other options would you look into if you have another baby?

I am 22 weeks with my second little girl. She was a surprise, as I didn't really feel ready to give birth again. I thought about a home-birth and going back to the birth center. I decided against both, because I think I will carry to almost 42 weeks again, and  have meconium and have to transfer into the hands of strangers again. I don't want to go my whole pregnancy worrying about everything going perfect so that I can avoid a transfer.

I am going to birth at Littleton Adventist, with South Denver Midwives. They are part of a very low-intervention group of OBs, so in case of a risk out, I am in the hands of OBs I am comfortable with. They work in conjunction with the OBs in a lot of high-risk situations, instead of truly risking out, and even assist in the event of a c-section.  Littleton has a birth wishes tour, where they go over your birth plan and put it in your file. They also have various signs that say "procedure in progress", etc. to help with privacy, but I think I will still push with an audience, if I have meconium in my water again. My dates are a little off at the OB office. They think I am 21 weeks, I am really 22 weeks based on conception dates, so I think my generous due date will help me avoid an induction. I hope to labor at home a while in privacy. I hope that will help.
