High-Risk Pregnancy

gestational diabetes

I have a question ladies. This is my second pregnancy and I had gestational diabetes with my last one. My doctor is waiting until my 28 week visit for my glucose test. I am concerned that he is waiting too long to test. I was now insulin last time so it was pretty bad. I can say that I am eating way healthier all around now but I am still worried that he may be waiting too long. My daughter was fine and weighed 6 lbs 12 oz but that was with major help from testing my sugars and using my insulin. I guess my question is should I talk to my doctor and ask to get the test done sooner or just wait for my 28 week appointment.?

Re: gestational diabetes

  • Possibly. I was just told to eat like I had it again this time around at the beginning. And they would test me around 18/20 weeks. By 24 weeks I found out I did in fact have it but I am able to control it with diet alone like last time. It wouldn't hurt to mention it.

  • Do you still have a meter? I would test often throughout the day if yoy are that concerned. Wait atleast 2 hours post meal. But ultimately you know your body better. I would bring up your concerns with your doctor. I haven't had gd but i am type 1 :) good luck!
  • In most cases, GD "comes on" about 26-28 weeks, so you may not have it before that and it may develop around that time. So, testing TOO early can be problematic.

If you still have your meter, I would start testing  and see what your numbers are doing. I had GD with both my first two and according to my doctor, I passed my 3-hour. I was skeptical and tested on my own and sure enough, I have GD again. I only started the diet at 31 weeks this time, but my nutritionist assured me my blood sugar levels were probably only minimally out of range before now because of the way it progresses.

I actually asked my doctor to prescribe me a new meter even though I wasn't diagnosed at that point and he obliged!

  • My doctor had me start testing right away and told me I won't have a glucose test this time. Since I had it last time they're automatically treating me as a GD patient. They already put me on NPH insulin because my fasting numbers were too high. :( Although this time around I had a lot of issues with a rash after injecting the insulin. They've changed the types of insulin and the type of needles and so far nothing is working.
  • @stephiashton‌, Levimir was just approved for use in pregnancy. Talk to your doctor about that option.
  • @TeresaWE that's what they put me on first and it was the worst reaction I got. They switched me a 2nd time and i'm on Novolin N and it still causes red hives but not quite as bad so I guess I'll take that!! lol
  • My friend has GD got diagnosed in her first trimester. She was having a hard time getting her numbers down following the Dr's food advice and they almost put her on insulin. But she started reading about a low carb real food diet in this book and her numbers are all down to normal now.
