Question for the EPers

Pumping question. My right side produces much more than my left. (2.5 ounces vs 0.5 ounces.) Right now I'm only pumping two or three times a day since DD is EBF. She nurses on one side while I pump the other. Will pumping more on the left eventually increase production?

P.s. Im new to the group with a 6 week old girl :)

Re: Question for the EPers

  • I had that issue at the beginning when I was still nursing DS. I would nurse him from my overproductive side and pump the other for at least 15-20 minutes. The supply evened out after about a week.

  • I do not bf and only pump and my left us still lagging behind. I will get 0.5-1 oz on the left and 2-3 on the right. I have low supply and only get 2-4 oz each pump session.
  • Thanks ladies. She has never shown any favoritism to one side or the other while nursing so I had no idea until I started pumping last week there was such a difference between the sides.

Babies are much more efficient than the pump at getting milk out, so it's likely that she doesn't notice the difference when she's feeding.  If she's satisfied after eating on that side, I wouldn't really worry about it.

FWIW, I have a big difference in my sides as well and so I try to start over half of each nursing session on that side in an effort to boost it's production.  It hasn't worked, but she's still getting enough, so meh.

  • Most people pump both sides regardless of which you feed on. Or you can pump the opposite side while you nurse.

If you want to help your left produce more, pump longer on the left and press the letdown button again when the milk stops flowing.  But for what it's worth, it's normal to have one side that overachieves!

Thanks, I tried a different setting when pumping on the left and got 2 ounces!

    Is 2-4oz considered low supply?
I wouldn't think 4oz per boob is low. Unless she means 4oz total?
