TTC after 35

Question

Re: Question

  • I just recently started charting and that, along with opk's, has been helpful to me. I like knowing what's going on.

I know they can be expensive but you can get a big pack of them on amazon for cheaper than in stores. I use the Babi brand but most use wondro's from what I've seen.
I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

  • personally i am skipping on OPKs... i used them for a few months but every brand was different and only the really expensive ones were easy to figure out.  I do temp every day, though, so I can see when I have cervical mucus (CM) that is egg-whitey or watery which indicates fertility.  And, I see the temp jump after ovulation.  I start having sex about 5 days prior to my typical ovulation date. Actually we usually try to BD just after my period ends to start.

So, that's what I've been doing.  Bottom line is they're not worth it to me.
    TTC#1 since Aug 2013, I'm 37, DH 41.
Maya Arvigo Abdominal massage (daily self care), plus TTC meditations.
I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.
July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April
    12/17/14 - Natural BFP!
  • They're worth it to me bc I have cervical mucus everyday and sometimes for me it can be tricky to interpret. The opk is reassurance to me that yes you're on the right track and you need to have sex with dh again today! :) then obviously temping confirms that too

  • Because I buy the Wondfo bundles on Amazon, I can say it's definitely worth it to me. I chart and temp also. But especially this month starting Clomid, it threw my O date further back, so I could've missed it. My FF is STILL not registering me as having O'd. I can't really tell by my CM either.

Definitely worth getting the strips. It's not like a PG test though, faint lines don't count. It needs to be the same or darker than the control line, period. Once you accept that, they're not as hard to figure out.

  • They are definitely worth it for me. I don't temp because my sleep schedule is not consistent, I don't sleep well so getting accurate temps are difficult. So it is my best predictor.

  • I *think* they are worth it for me. My chart is a wreck and it may be because of my Hoshimoto's (thyroid) which will never give me a consistent temp. I see my endocrinologist today. If i could get the temps to be reliable I probably won't do them more than a month or 2 just to confirm, but at least I could see my body tried this time.

Off Mirena Nov 2013, On Nuvaring end of Jan, Back off Sept 2014.  Never ending cycle starting end of Sept...
    11/14 Provera failed... cycle continues
12/14 High FSH (57 "midcycle")  OBGYN had no clue... about anything
01/15 More lab results coming back from RE. U/S showed small (1")cyst on left ovary, thin lining, and couldn't locate right ovary so  possibly straight to DE and IVF

Occassionally mess with the chart below to see "what if" and learn (not to make it pretty but because FF stays drunk with me).

  • They are worth it to me - I buy the Target brand which comes with a seal-able tube full of 30 test strips. Super easy to read and since I chart I can limit my OPK testing to around the time my chart indicates and then I end up making the one package of OPKs last a couple of months.
  • I think they "worked"--as in, predicted ovulation--pretty well for me.  However, since my problem is egg quality, not timing, that turned out not to matter in the long run.

You might as well try them for yourself and see what you think.  FWIW, nobody on here seems to have anything nice to say about the Clearblue Fertility monitor.  Maybe start with something cheaper? :)

I know I'm in the minority, but I've actually found this better than the wondfos for me (although it's not the actual fertility monitor so maybe that's different). i have a very very very difficult time reading the ones with the lines (I've never gotten an actual positive), so the smiley face version is more consistent for me and have been spot on (confirmed by temps) for the last 3 months. I do ovulate pretty early on though so one box lasts 3-4 months which is probably why I'm okay with them :D

  • If you are seeing a RE don't bother with the OPKs because they will monitor you with bloodwork and US which is far more accurate (and save your money and time!).
