Feeding a grazer - need help

My 1 month old has been feeding for only about 10 mins and then then loses interest.  Then, of course, within an hour or two he'll wanna eat again, but only for about 10 mins.  Because of this I haven't been able to sleep and he's had really bad spit up as well.  Any suggestions on how to get him to be more routine and for me to get more sleep?

  • It sounds like you're doing really good job.  Not sleeping is torture, but completely normal.  You are still in survival mode (what I like to call the first 2-3 months).  At a month, our "routine" revolved around diaper, eat, cuddle, sleep (usually on my chest), repeat.  I never worried about waking him up to eat because he never slept long enough for that!  As tough as it was, I really tried to watch my baby's cues and not the clock.  At that age, my guy ate every 1.5-2 hours, too.  Now, he eats about every 2-2.5 hours if we're together.

As for the spitting up, is your baby gaining weight?  Is he usually happy?  If so, then it doesn't sound like it's a medical problem and hopefully he'll grow out of it.  If you're really concerned, get in touch with the pedi or a LC.  Good luck... hang in there!
