Naming Siblings with the same letter??

I know I could post this on the baby name forum but I appreciate all of your opinions as well, so let me hear what you think! DS' name starts with "G" and this LO is also a boy and I happen to like another "G" name. Do you think that it's ok to use the name? We do plan on having at least one more baby (providing everything goes well) and whether it were another boy or a girl, it would definitely not be named with a "G." Should I just find a different name and forget about it because it's a faux-pas?

Re: Naming Siblings with the same letter??

  • Idk. I was iffy on this. I have an Owen, and wanted to name this baby Oliver. But felt weird about having 2 O names.

My H nixed it anyway. ... so we picked a different letter.

  • It's not weird, I know a few families who do this
  • My cousins kids all have names beginning with Z. Originally it was not intentional and were going to gear away from it but the names they liked begin with Z so they just went with it. Zoey, Zeke, Zora and Zena.
  • It's not weird, it's personal preference. If you like it, go for it. If you don't, choose a different one/letter :)  For ME, it's not something I would do. I just don't care for siblings with the same first initial.

  • Thanks everyone, I don't think it's a huge deal, but I know some people would ask if the next one would be the same letter! If it was then we would be "those parents" and if it wasn't I'm sure we would get comments about "breaking" the tradition hahaha. Definitely something to think about!
  • I had this concern too - but slightly different. My DD is Brooklyn and the boy's name we picked for baby #2 is Lincoln...I was concerened on them ending in the same sound - but ehhhh oh well

  • We have 3 and waiting on arrival of our 4th. All will begin with J. I think no matter the name or what it begins with you will end up calling all of them until you reach the one you want to talk to...catch my drift!
  • My nephews are Keegan and Connor :) And their sister is Carley.
My sister and I both have C names. I don't think it's weird. My husband and I don't plan on picking names with the same letter but you never know!
  • I have been struggling with this too. My daughter's name starts with a C and it just so happens that the majority of the boy names I like also start with a C. It isn't intentional at all. I posed this question to the names board a while back and the general concensus that I got was if you loved a name, use it. And that it wasn't too bad for just two kids but that most people thought it was kind of cheesy if you extended it beyond two kids.
  • My H's family are James and Janet, the kids are Jim, Jeremy and Josh. I didn't even realize it till we had been dating for a few months. I think this is one of those things that seems to matter a lot now but as they grow up and have their own lives it matters less and less.:) I say if you like it, go for it!
  • My siblings, my cousin that was pretty much raised as my brother, and I all have R names. My grandma would run through all of our names before she got to the right one XP
  • I actually like the matching first letter... my brothers 2 r Lillian n Logan... I wish we had chosen an easier letter for our first little one on the way but I think finding more W names we like might b hard lol... maybe we will try later when that time comes... GL :-)
  • Dh's family is four boys, all with J names. Actually FIL is a J name too. I think it's weird to do that intentionally, but MIL was super pissed when we didn't pick a J name for DD or our upcoming DS.
I feel like intentionally picking names that start with the same letter is odd, but if the names you happen to love start with the same letter, then whatever.

  • My friend's mom is one of 5 and they all have K or C names. My friend's kids are F. It's not a big deal. If you like the names, use them.

  • It doesn't bother me, even though it's not something I would personally do. I would be afraid of yelling through a list of names before getting to the right one.
Like PP have stated, just don't go crazy like 19 kids and counting and you should be fine.

  • My parents named my brother and I names that begin with T simply because they liked the names. When they were expecting my youngest brother, my says that a lot of people asked if he would have a T name as well. They hadn't used the same letter intentionally, and so they just picked a name that they loved. His name begins with an M, and I don't think anyone has ever said a word about it.
  • DH was hell bent on naming all our kids with A's. Luckily for him I already loved our kids names and extra lucky that our newest addition is a girl because had she been a he the A would have stopped there. His ENTIRE family is A expect his mom and one nephew (whose mom now regrets not doing an A name & even wants to get his name changed lol) but me and DH also have A names so we are the A team.

    Andrea - Me
    Alex Sr. - DH
    Athena - DD
    Alex II - DS
    And soon to be
    Annabelle -DD2
    :)

I liked Avery or August for another boy but SIL is having a girl and naming her Avery. DH didn't like August so I would have went with a different letter lol

But in all fairness I didn't mean for all my kids to have the same letter it just sorta happened.
  • Mine will both have R names. I just liked those names. Not trying to be a Kardashian or anything lol.

  • Thanks for your input ladies!! Based on your feedback, I'm pretty sure we have agreed on a name!! yay!!! I'm so excited and can't wait to meet our little man! And for those of you who care:

    DS is Grady William Luke
DS2 will be Graeme Martin Innes

All of the middle names are family names and DH I think is totally on board with our choice as long as it was the Scottish spelling because he knows no one with that version! (Which is what I was going for)

    Thanks again!
  • If you can't find any other names you love, then I say go for it. I think chosing a name that you love is the most important thing, regardless of what letter it starts with.

  • Is Graeme similar to Graham? My son's middle name is Graham. :)

Yes it's the Scottish version, pronounced the exact same way!

People use graham as a name? I'm so confused. I thought that was a type of flour.

and cracker....haha but I really have no problem with either spelling, I just like the uniqueness of the Scottish version plus my family originates from there so it's suiting! Although DH's family is Dutch haha
  • @TRexsMum‌ - Yeah I suppose that Graham is kinda like Grant. Interesting, I didn't know that Graham is a type of flour.

  • Yeah I had never seen that name spelled Graeme... I was saying it "gr-aim" my head until you mentioned it how it was meant to be. I feel like TB has taught me about 10-15 traditional spellings of names I was already familiar with that I had never heard before!

  • I would go with the name you like best, regardless of the letter it starts.... sometimes folks do it on purpose, thats fine, too.

@TRexsMum‌ Everything I read about the pronunciation said Graeme is pronounced GREY-ahM as two syllables which is similar to how I personally pronounce Graham. It's not pronounced like Gram or Graim. We will be pronouncing it with two syllables.

  • My sister and I have the same first initial, it's no big deal, and our names sound nice together.
  • Also @TRexsMum‌ I know both Grahams and Graemes, all in their 30s or 40s
