NBR: Cocktail Attire

DH's work is doing their annual Christmas party this weekend, which is always a lot of fun - his coworkers, even his boss(es), are pretty laid-back and fun. It's being hosted at a restaurant, and has a casino theme. On the invite, it says "cocktail attire requested." Style dress-codes like this one are 100% not my (or DH's) forte. We're clearly not classy enough.   ;)  Anyway, I did my Google-ing and was a bit overwhelmed with suggestions across the board. I'm wondering if you guys could share your thoughts on a couple specific questions:

For DH: would a darker grey suit work as opposed to black? There's a very light pinstripe on the suit. Or would dress slacks and a jacket be a better choice?

For me: I already own this dress and it still fits. I'm not sure if lace is okay for cocktail attire...would this dress fit in the cocktail attire dress code?

I don't think that we have to perfectly nail it, since I don't think it's going to be a super formal event, but I don't want to be wildly off the mark.

  • I say yes to all. You always have people who will underdress and over dress for themes. I'm the queen of obsessing over event attire. I'm pretty sure I grow my attire every time DH has a business meeting!

  • I agree.  Tell husband not to wear a suit - pants and a jacket (with or without tie) are appropriate man attire.

Your dress is the appropriate length, but from the small image it looks a little summery to me.  It wouldn't if you paired it with black tights, though.

  • I think that dress works great. And H probably doesn't necessarily need a full suit, but since he'll likely take the jacket off, that works!

  • I agree with all of the previous comments. The dress looks nice and would be great with black tights.

  • Agree with pps that H doesn't need a full suit, jacket and dress shirt would be fine, tie optional.  Your dress is great but I agree black tights, black shoes and jewlery and black cardigan.  Looks like it already has a black belt?  If not I would do that too.

  • Shirt/tie and slacks for Dh amd that dress will work for you. I like the prior suggestions of black tights and accessories.

  • Thanks so so much for the feedback! Pairing the dress with black tights is a great idea, I wouldn't have thought of that and it'll be perfect for the season.

And it's helpful to know about DH's outfit, that he doesn't need to do a full-blown suit. He'll be pretty happy to hear about that, actually.
