Babies: 0 - 3 Months

mom to be - Diaper question

I'm expecting my first baby in 3 months!! super excited! so my HD and I decided to start stocking up on some essentials so when our LO decides to makes is grand entrance we don't have to make runs to the store as much. We are stocking up on diapers right now cause I got coupons lol and I don't want to over buy a certain size of diaper. I've bought one box of 72 newborns yesterday and still have 3 coupons left lol!

so on average how long did a box of 72 diaper last you?

how long did you baby wear newborn diapers?

Thanks for the help!

Re: mom to be - Diaper question

  • Newborns go through 1 diaper per feeding on average, plus maybe a couple in between. So up to like 12 per day... Depending on the size of your baby you may or may not need N size for a long time. Get some Ns and some size 1 and if you need more, just go get more... But I would think you'll easily use more than 72 Ns in the beginning...

Our little guy was born weighing 8 lb. 4 oz. He was in newborn diapers for about 3 weeks. He went through about 10 diapers a day for about 2 months.

He was in size 1 diapers for about 2 months. He just recently switched to Size 2. My BFF said her little girl (who is now 10 months old) was in size 2 diapers the longest - from about 3 months through 7 months. If you want to stock ahead, I would say buy 1s and 2s. The newborn diapers we got as gifts were plenty - we never had to buy any because he was out of them so fast. (Plus you have no idea how big or little your LO will be either. Newborn diapers have a 10 pound limit.

Also, like the above poster said, there are differences in the brands. They are almost like jeans - you have to try them on. I have found on our LO when he first gets into a size we buy Huggies because they run smaller. Once he's established in that size we switch to Pampers, and when the Pampers start to get a little snug, we switch to Luvs as we've found they "spread" a little farther. I don't think they are "bigger" so much as they are "longer" which our LO needs because he has a long torso.

A box of 72 diapers lasted about a week for me. I agree with PP about not stocking up on a crap load of diapers right away. You never know if you may need to use a different brand and it would suck to be stuck with a bunch of diapers you can't use.

ETA: To answer your second question, I've been using NB diapers on my LO for 5 weeks. We're picking up size 1 diapers for her this weekend.

My DD was born 8lbs 2oz. and never really needed size N diapers. The hospital used the size 1 Pampers on her without any issues. When we went home we used a small pack of size N Pampers that we already had. They barely fit her so we switched back to size 1 when the newborn diapers ran out. She wore the N diapers for a week.
  • My baby was born 6 lbs and 8 ounces. He has gone through a 72 box of newborn diapers in 8 days. I EBF and he has a BM after ever feeding.
  • As previous posts have said be careful stocking up as you don't know yet what suits your baby. I get through about 50 every few days, way more than I ever thought! I started off with the more expensive brands but now I just get cheaper basic ones as DS has a wet nappy constantly and there's no way I could afford it otherwise!
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!
  • We went through 2 boxes of 88 NB size pampers swaddlers, plus what we took from the hospital (20ish), plus 2 packs of 32 NB size Huggies with the umbilical cut out (SUPER nice until the cord falls off, but they tended to leak more). She changed to size 1 around 5.5 weeks. I agree about not stocking up on one particular brand. Pampers NB were my favorite, but I find the size ones to feel almost damp sometimes and will try Huggies after I run through my diaper cakes (yes plural). Luvs gave my nephew a rash, but pampers never felt damp with him. It's different baby to baby.
