Naptime

DD has turned into quite the cat napper at home. She will only sleep in 20-30 minute increments during the day. She's clearly still tired, because she usually will wake up still fussing, yawning, etc. It isn't enjoyable for either of us...

For now, I have been trying to have her nap just in our living room with me. I don't try to make it super quiet or dark, because she is going to have to nap in a room with other babies at daycare. Is this where I am going wrong? Should I take her to her crib, swaddle, etc?

What is everyone else doing about naps? How is your LO's mood during the day?

Re: Naptime

  • DS sleeps at most 2 hours at a time during the day. More likely he's asleep 30 minutes or so. I usually nurse to sleep in a semi-quiet room but not too quiet. I also keep it bright. He fights naps though so sometimes it takes awhile. I'm really just learning his cues. Yesterday he napped badly and was crabby and tired all day.

Once he's asleep I either hold him or put him in his swing or RNP.

  • I hold DD3 all the damn time. She will sleep for hours in my arms or 20 minutes if I put her down. I probably should start putting her down more since I have to go back to work soon.

  • I have started to notice a pattern in DDs naps this week. Morning and afternoon she sleeps 20-30 mins but midday she will sleep 1 1/2- 2hours.

  • My LO won't usually nap for more than a few minutes at a time unless he is swaddled in his swing or being held or bounced in his bouncer. I would do what you need to do. You really can't anticipate how LO will do at daycare.

  • Glad to hear I am not alone in the "cat nap". I am not going to make it a big deal for now...but I do want to get her better at daytime naps in the coming months. I am staying home with her til she is about 5 1/2 months so we have a while, so I unfortunately can't just hope daycare will work itself out because I feel like she will be developing sleep habits well before then.

I think I will try one nap in the crib and then maybe swaddling her for a nap in the living room.

  • I really just follow baby's cues and don't worry about setting up a schedule or anything.  She is 6 weeks and tends to have a long 2ish hour nap in the early afternoon and several 30 mins - 1 hr ones sprinkled throughout the day,  She sleeps almost anywhere at any time so I don't worry about swaddling or anything.  Sometimes I hold her, sometimes I'll set her down and if she's sleeping in the car seat I leave her in it (in the house, not the car),

  • I basically just let her sleep when she wants to. During the day I keep her in whichever room I'm in. Bright, noisy, unswaddled. I think baby's disposition probably has a lot to do with how napping is handled.
