TTC after 35

HSG... Ouch!

I has a HSG done yesterday and wow, it really hurt! But my tubes were open!! I know that I have read it can be therapeutic but it also seems a bit traumatic to my cervix and uterus. I am still spotting and having a little bit of clotting- hopefully that will go away in the next day or so.  Anybody else have this experience? We are going to still try this month but I am not feeling super hopeful. I know I don't really have a question - I am just hoping some camaraderie will lift my spirits.

Re: HSG... Ouch!

  • I had one done last month and WOW it was painful.. I also had no blockages but the pain was unbearable.  I had some bleeding for a day... the only thing I experienced after is that I ovulated a couple days later than normal.  We didn't get a BFP this month but found out the issues lie with my DH's motility.  Good luck!

  • @susykat77 - glad you're tubes are open!  Sorry it was so painful!  I'm debating on having it done but I don't know....it's a lot of money, especially when my insurance pays for nothing but on the other side I think it would give me some peace of mind and/or explain why I haven't gotten my BFP yet.

  • I'm sorry for your pain and hope you feel better soon. I also hope that you get one of the post-HSG BFPs!

  • I have no experience but wanted to offer healing thoughts and *hugs* to you.
I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

  • I'm sorry it was so painful for you. I didn't have the same experience as you, but I was SO happy to hear that my tubes were clear. So for me getting that answer made it worth the pain.

@dream2b3 My insurance doesn't cover any fertility testing or treatments so I called different hospitals to find out how much each charged for it. I got such varying prices, as high as $2000 down to $350. I had to drive an hour away to pay $350 but it was worth it for me... Just something I learned going through this, hopefully it helps you

  • FX that they are strong swimmers! Keep us posted :)

  • I dont have any personal experience to share but wanted to say that I hope you feel better soon! Good luck!
  • Hi!
just wanted to chime in and say that while my HSG wasn't the most painful thing in the world compared to when my OB couldn't get my broken IUD out - that was much worse - but about 2-3 days after I was getting really painful cramping and also bad nasuea from the antibiotics.  They gave me antibiotics b/c they had tried to open the tube and I guess it bled?
Anyway the dr told me that I could take ibuprofin ("whatever you take for a headache is fine") and it helped.
Also, peeing felt odd, like burning sensation for about 4 days after.

    TTC#1 since Aug 2013, I'm 37, DH 41.
Maya Arvigo Abdominal massage (daily self care), plus TTC meditations.
I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.
July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April
    12/17/14 - Natural BFP!
  • I knew there would be discomfort or pain, but it wasn't as bad as I imagined. Knowing your tubes are open is a huge relief for most of us, it seems. I was also told by my GP that we should do the BD every day after the SHG as when the tubes are open and clear she has known many patients to conceive during that cycle because it is all cleared out more then normal I guess? If you're starting to get over the pain, do the BD and maybe you'll have some luck!
