Pregnant after 35

Acne and Fine lines-- At the same time.

I'm suffering from both. More so from the acne. Most skin care products to treat either is a no no during pregnancy. If you have found anything that works please recommend it.

  • Acne was horrible in the first trimester for me but got better once I reached the 2nd.

  • I have no advice. Usually my skin is great during pregnancy. This time, though, I keep getting one pimple--one only--but in the same place, over and over. It's red and on the VERY TIP of my nose, and it seems to show up every time we're going to do something social! Nothing anywhere else. So weird!

  • I'm actually a consultant for Rodan & Fields.  Newly signed up.  I am LOVING their products so far.  I've been using redefine which has nothing in it that you're not supposed to use during pregnancy. It's a super easy three step process.  You put a light mask on your face.. literally it takes 30-60 seconds to dry.  Wash it off.. toner..  and then moisturizer.  It's mostly for fine lines.. firmness.. that kind of thing.  I LOVE it.  They do have an 'unblemish' line but if I recall correctly.. there may be something in that line you can't use.  They have 'Soothe' too which is great for sensitive skin issues. A lot of people use that on their kids too. I've used that for my son and his very very chapped lips.

It is kinda pricey but it lasts a super long time!  I can get you info if you need it.

  • What is on the NONO list? I heard Retin-A is ok and that works for both. UGH. To be 43 and have acne..it's not cool. I got one big zit this week. --Heather

  • I am right there with you!  I have always had issues with acne, and it got much worse after I stopped BC last year.  I am anxiously awaiting the magical "pregnancy glow" that people talk about - HA!  I don't think it exists.  Anyway, the only thing that works for me at all is benzoyl peroxide.  My OB said t's totally fine to use during pregnancy.  I specifically use Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask.  Good luck!  I hope you find something that works for you!

I heard Retin-A is a huge no no and causes birth defects...  You might want double check.

  • This is what I found..

    Differin (adapelene)
    Retin-A, Renova (tretinoin)
    Retinoic acid
    Retinol
    Retinyl linoleate
    Retinyl palmitate
    Tazorac and avage (Tazarotene)

    Salicylic acid
    Beta hydroxy acid
    BHA

The above are things I read that you are not supposed to use during pregnancy.  I feel like the Rodan & Fields stuff I have in their reverse line has something in it too.. starts with a C and cannot for the life of me remember right now!!

Although I've been using the night renewal serum.. not every day.. more like once a week and I think that may have retinol in it.. it's not ingested.. it's topical which they said to avoid but is just precautionary as there's no evidence that it causes harm.. but I'm not sure!

    Here is a good source:

Summary: most topicals are fine, except hydroquinone; topical retinoids are controversial so probably best avoided until after you deliver.

For acne, I use benzamycin, a prescription topical that combines an antibiotic with benzoyl peroxide, with my OB's blessing.

For fine lines, I highly recommend frowns, furlesse or nexcare tape, plus lots of hydration (water), sleep and an exfoliator.

Some people swear by the ROC disks - they're oil free and supposedly hypoallergenic; my skin does feel great immediately after I used them, but, unfortunately, they make me break out.
