How often does your baby swallow while nursing? My dd is 13 weeks and takes forever (1 hour) to nurse. She only swallows ever 3/4 sucks. Does this sound normal?

Re: Swallowing

  • I can't really tell when my LO is swallowing.  Sorry I'm no help.  An hour seems like a long time for 3 months, but if she's doing 25 min per side, with a burping break in there, I can see how it would take that long.  As long as she's having enough wet/poop diapers in a day, it should be fine.  I know BF is really time consuming, but remember, she won't stay this little for that much longer.  And, they definitely get faster at nursing the older they get.  GL!

My little guy pretty much swallows every time he sucks.  At the start of a nursing session, he does faster, more shallow type sucks and once I letdown, he slows down and takes bigger gulps.  I agree with PP that BF takes longer in the beginning and that baby gets more efficient as he/she gets older.  An hour at 13 weeks seems long though.  I'm wondering if she's actually eating the entire time... the multiple sucks to one swallow makes me think she might be comfort nursing.
