How much milk?

How much milk does your LO drink?  DD used to drink so much milk...too much really..she'd barely eat solids. Finally we got her on a good balance of milk and solids but then when she turned 2 and we switched her to skim, she only drank it for a while and then just stopped.  She doesn't seem interested in going back to her whole milk routine either.  She only wants to drink milk in a bowl with cheerios.  I give it to her every morning but it's obviously a pain since it's messy.

At DS's 12 month appt yesterday the dr said he should be getting 16-24 ounces (yogurt, milk, etc) and I should have asked if it's the same for a 2+ year old but I didn't think about it.  She only gets a bowl of milk in the morning and a 4 oz yogurt...sometimes a cheese stick.  I am worried maybe she isn't getting enough now but I've heard people say milk isn't as big a deal as some people think.

Re: How much milk?

  • For 2+ year-olds, it's more about the calcium than the milk.  I think if you can get 3 sources of calcium in her each day, you're good.  Sophia has never been a huge milk drinker as far as toddlers go, and probably only gets about 6 oz of milk per day, but she also always gets a yogurt and cheese, so her pedi isn't concerned.

  • Quinn doesn't really drink any milk. She's only been weaned for a little over a month and I haven't pushed her drinking it. She may have a little with dinner, but not much. Her pedi said as long as she is getting enough dairy through yogurt, cheese, etc. then he's ok with that.

  • Both my kids love milk but I don't count oz. They get a glass at all meals and Leo usually asks for seconds at dinner. They get water during snack/non-meal times.

  • Similar to @hmp1‌ , they drink milk with meals and sometimes ask for it in between. I don't really track it but I don't think it's too much.
  • DD has never been a huge fan of milk, we try for 3 servings a day. Usually a yogurt after dinner, a cheese stick with snack and milk with breakfast or lunch.

  • DD drinks a lot more of it these days than DS. I don't really worry either way. As long as they're eating, I don't limit it. And if DS isn't drinking a lot, I make sure he gets plenty of cheese and yogurt.

  • E won't drink milk out of a cup. He nurses twice a day but I doubt that's more than a couple ounces. He drinks milk in cereal a few days a week, and mostly eats yogurt and cheese.
