Anyone else still battling insomnia?

I remember there was a thread about it, but can't find it in the searches.
My insomnia has gotten much much worse over the last month, to the point of depression. Xanax stopped working for me all of a sudden. Then my doctor prescribed me a slew of meds that actually made it worse. I went days without sleep and got ambien which made me hyper. Klonopin and seroquel failed me knock me out.
I am getting a new doctor and hopefully find a good solution, but it feels like I'm dying half the time. Thank god my parents have been watching the kids but this can't go on. Any fellow insomniacs in the same boat?

  • Thank you for your response! It's so debilitating :( haven't slept much in the last 5 days and literally feel like dying. Just don't understand why these meds don't work for me!

  • Paxil fixed it for me. It was a symptom of awful anxiety. Good luck!
  • I don't have true insomnia, but I have problems sleeping due to pain. Before I was diagnosed, I was prescribed many sleeping medications and none of them worked for me. One actually made me feel as though my eyeballs were shaking and I didn't sleep for 48 hours. I felt like I was losing it. All of the meds made me feel weird. It's trial and error. Definitely find a doctor that will help you find a solution. I take narcotics and zanaflex now, but that's for pain also. I hope you get some relief and sleep soon.

  • It is not a traditional treatment for insomnia at all but lithium or other mood stabilizers to manage moods can definitely help you sleep better. It's not a sleep medicine at all - it won't make you sleepy - but if a mood disorder is your issue, addressing the root of the problem may help. You could be having a mixed mood episode with some aspects of depression and some of mania, namely restlessness and insomnia.

Also oddly enough sometimes lower doses of seroquel - say 250 and under - help more than higher ones which can cause more restlessness. I'd try 75 or 100 even if 400 failed before.

(In case you can't tell, I have been there.) Best of luck.

***It's not strictly about depression, but if you haven't already, read Kay Jamison's An Unquiet Mind. Her descriptions of crushing depression really resonated with me, made me realize none of us are alone.
