gift suggestions for nephew

What do 8 year old boys want for Christmas? When I married MH I also got a nephew. I'm hopeless when it comes to toy shopping and I need some ideas on what to get him for Christmas. I find toy shopping in person overwhelming and I leave more confused than when I came it. 

Some things he liked in the past included a remote controlled spider (he liked it, but his mom wouldn't let him play with it) and some tinker toy type things that the dog tried to destroy.

Cousin likes ninja stuff. He also really likes his build a bear, idk if that's a typical boy thing. He loves his scooter for outside and any cool accessories for his bike.

Does he play sports? If so, you could get him something related to that sport (equipment or apparel). Does he live near a sport team? You could go in with his parents on tickets to a game.

My nephew is 8 and he wanted True Hero stuff. But I only know that cause I asked his mom. I find that easiest since some parents won't let their kids have certain things or they might already have the item you're thinking about.

Nerf guns are always a safe bet. Also a safe bet their parents will hate you.

I am a book lover and believe strongly in encouraging reading so a book/gift card to bookstore for me.  Also, boys of that age might be more interested in a good quality comic book.  

The sports themed gifts are always awesome.  Those damn nerf guns are annoying...

I have 4 sons, one is 9. He ALWAYS asks for a nerf gun. Every year since hewas 5. That's a safe bet. He liked Hot Wheels at one point as well. Also, those flimsy remote control helicopters, but they always break, so nevermind.
