December 2014 Moms

Working past due date?

I know we've had lots of posts about when we may be starting maternity leave, but now that we're in December, I wondered if anyone's plans had changed and/or you have definite plans now.

Other than being 39 weeks pregnant and that everything is difficult/uncomfortable, I feel pretty good.  I'm due Wednesday and had an OB appointment this morning where baby's heart rate is perfect, fluid level is great, etc (I feel very lucky).  My next appointment (40 weeks) is this Friday.  So I plan to work until Thursday this week and if baby doesn't come over the weekend (I'm hoping he/she does) work a couple days next week.  We have our holiday party on Monday so I figure there's no reason not to come in if I'm not in labor.  I think I'm going to set my absolute last day as 12/10 as long as OB is okay with that.

Anyone else working past due date? Have you set an absolute last day even if baby isn't here yet?

Also, due date has come, gone and I am just so anxious to meet baby!  Please be healthy and strong baby, mama can't wait to meet you :)

Re: Working past due date?

  • I am not legally allowed to work past my due date in order to collect disability. I suppose every state and work situation is different though. Personally, I would work right up until the baby comes in order to maximize time off with baby (assuming you are feeling up to it). Good luck!

  • I work from home and plan to work until little guy comes. If I had to commute to an office I definitely would have a stop date. I don't wear real clothes to work so it makes life better :)
  • I'm with you, @misschristinemarie! Also due 12/31, and next week is my last week of work...I've been essentially down to part-time for a couple of months anyway (I work for myself, so I have this luxury). Even though I'm sure I won't go into labor any time soon, having time to get things situated at home for Christmas and baby's arrival will be great. I am very grateful to be able to do this!

  • I am technically not scheduled to work any more (due 12/12) but I have been picking up shifts as the days go and I feel well. Every shift I pick up, someone is my back up in case I go into labor and have to go home, haha. I'm not going back until February so I'm trying to save up as much cash as possible because I don't get paid maternity leave.
  • I'm two weeks away from my 12/15 due date and had planned to work right up until I go into labor, or until Dr says to stop, whichever comes 1st. This past weekend was tough and I've already had two 2hr naps today (my one day off a week) which is unusual for me. I am considering making this my last week. I had eliminated all the physical aspects of my job that I could and the few things that are left suddenly seem like too much to do every day. My next Dr appointment is Wednesday and I plan to discuss that with her. I don't get paid maternity leave, so that weighs on my mind since I plan to take 3 months off.

  • I'm due 12/25 and my last day is Saturday. I'm a hairstylist with a decent clientele. I'm working just under 30 hrs and keeping pretty busy. But I am literally touching people with my belly now and I'm just done. I've got a busy Saturday ahead of me but the end is near!!
  • glad to hear you're feeling great, mama!

due date is dec. 26. i'm a teacher and my xmas break begins on dec 23. even if baby hangs out for a bit, i won't return into january. i was fully content to work all the way up until dec 23, but i'm getting increasingly uncomfortable (ugh, aren't we all? haha). that said, my school has been super accommodating to me and i'm able to spend as much time off my feet as any teacher could reasonably imagine. the only thing i may consider is taking those last two days (dec. 21&22) off before leave. i'll play that by ear though.

also, having total OMFGit'sDecemberAlready moments like every couple hours, haha. (clearly a FTM here).
  • My original  secret plan was to work until the end which in my case would be the Friday before 12/15 (scheduled C section). After this weekend, I've decided that perhaps I'd make 12/10 my last day. Before I made my last day "official", our office assistant scheduled a day full of meetings for me on 12/13 and 12/14. I know it's not her fault, and that the clients I'm meeting with are extremely controlling and freaking out that I'll be out of the office for extended leave...BUUUUUT wtf!?! Looks like my secret plan bit me in the booty. Waaaah!

  • I am due 12/31. I am a nanny who works long hours chasing after a toddler and two school age kids. After this week, I should be done. Of course, if I couldn't afford being off work, I would trudge through it till I am closer to my due date, but I AM DONE. Haha. FTM and I just want to enjoy these last few weeks before baby comes.
I am SO LUCKY my charge is just now starting to crawl, or I would be done for sure.

I am having a scheduled c-section and will work until the day before, and she will come back in Feb.
  • I'm due December 18th but only plan to work up until December 12th. I am lucky & have plenty of vacation time so will use that until I deliver. I plan to use that week I'm on vacation (if baby hasn't come by then) to relax, nap and keep the house in order so I'm fully ready for our baby!
  • Today is my due date and I plan on working the rest of the week baby permitting. Induction is scheduled for Monday if she doesn't come naturally. It would be nice to be off work already so I was home and close to the hospital but at the same time I think I would go stir crazy and I am still doing well.
  • Yup I'll be working past my due date if I don't have this baby by then. It would only be 2 days though because then we have Christmas vacation (teacher.) With DD she was 9 days late and I worked 5 days past my due date (other days were weekend days.)

  • My due date is 12/19 which will be my last day of work unless this little girl has other plans. I saved 5 days of vacation to combine with Xmas and New Year's Eve holiday so I will get paid for the holidays.
  • I'm due 12/20 and my last day of work is Wednesday. I purposely wanted a couple of weeks (if we get lucky) to try and 'nest' or relax or whatever before LO arrives. Pretty glad I decided on this because today one of my coworkers told me I looked miserable. Thanks for affirming that I wear my feelings on my face.
  • The original plan was work til the end. Now i am miserable at 38 and 5 having contractions on and off and having doc pull me tomorrow. I am done.

I work from home so as of right now I'm working until I go into the hospital. My leave is set to start on my sue date, but payroll told me to just keep them updated as for when baby comes and when leave will start. Praying baby boy waits until the 19th so I can finish out the month with my students as vacation starts at the end of the day on the 19th and I only need to get a few hours of work in for it to count.

  • I wanted to work till my due date 12/19, but work only put me on the schedule till 12/15. I want to save as much time as possible for when she's here. I only get 8 weeks, then back to full time.

  • I ended up starting leave this week (I'm due Sunday) because I wasn't sure if she would come early, how I would be feeling, yadayadayada. Now that it's here though, I honestly feel fine other than being uncomfortable and could have totally worked this week. It's too late though because I already submitted all my paperwork and my sub has already started so I'm just trying to use this week to nest, rest, and get last minute things done. But I would say if you feel like you can work, work. That way you'll have more time with your little one.
  • I'm due 12/10 and my planned last day is 12/9.  But I'm starting to reconsider...  DH's company holiday party is the evening of 12/10, so I'm thinking that if I haven't given birth I might as well work that day so that I don't have to commute into the city myself for the party that evening (we only have 1 car).

Then part of me is thinking that I should just work the full week, assuming I feel I can and I haven't had LO yet, to allow more time with him on the back end.  BUT, work has been so intense lately (14 hour days 6+ days a week) that I am kind of hoping I have a few days of no work AND no baby to just rest, adjust my mindset, finish some last minute stuff, etc.  So basically, I'm sort of playing it by ear.  My work knows my planned last day is the 9th but that it's flexible.

  • My due date is Dec 17th and I planned on working up to then. I think next week may be my last as I am having a harder time doing anything right now! I only get 6 weeks off, possibly 7 with my vacation if I use it so I hope baby is on time (prob not lol)
  • Due today and plan on working from home until she comes...although working from home is really keeping my laptop open and checking emails if anything comes up, not too bad.

  • I sit at a desk all day - I'll be at work until I'm in labor. If my work were in any physically demanding, then it might be a different story, but at least here I'm doing something productive and making money. If I were home, I'd be watching netflix.

I went past 41 weeks with my daughter and was at work until she came. The worst part is that people get tired of seeing you and the "you're still here!" comments are already old and I'm not even 39 weeks yet. Oh well.
  • I'm not due until 1/1. I do plan on working until baby comes. I work from home a lot but also by appointment in a broad range of locations. After the 15th I'm not going to schedule appointments or cover co-workers communities unless they are close to my home. There are only a handful that are close enough that I'd be ok working there. I'll have my bag in my car soon just incase.

With dd I worked until I went into labor. Funnily enough my "Friday"(Tuesday) I went through my office, packed up all non-essential items, cleaned up my emails and leads and buyers. Went on my weekend, and thursdsy night I called my boss and told him I wasn't feeling well and wouldn't make it to the meeting that next morning or our Christmas party...I had my daughter that morning lol

  • My due date is 12/16, and my last day is next Friday, 12/12. I could physically still work since I have a desk job, except the commute (walking to and from the subway and up and down within it) is wearing on me. I had had great luck with people offering me their seat until the last month or so. You know, when I could really use it. BOO PEOPLE.

Also work is crazy in a not good way right now and I'm more than happy to take a break.

  • I'm still on the fence. Due 12/15, and just sort of assumed I'd keep working until go time, but I'm feeling pretty over it now with 2 weeks looming over me.  Maybe I'll be able to work from home that week.

I'm working until I have baby although I really have to exercise restraint at the comments - "still pregnant?" and "when are you leaving??". the most annoying though is a coworker who sits next to me and who, every single time I leave my desk and come back within a span of time greater than 15 minutes says "WOAH!! where did you go?? I checked the bathrooms, we thought you had the baby!!! ha ha ha"

seriously. said it 3 times in one day.

  • @beevol - Yes! I said that same thing about the comments in another thread. I worked until 41 weeks too and I swear the "omg you haven't had that baby yet?" comments were the worst part of coming back every day when overdue.

  • I am thankful I have a job.

But I wish I didn't have to go into work. I have very little motivation to do anything and I feel like a very large decorative piece of office furniture. I'm basically stuck until my due date (dec 14th) But if LO is still not here then I think the Dr. will excuse me from work until we figure out the next step.

  • And I am now done working. I made it to Tuesaday which was just 40 weeks plus one day but yesterday. I started regular contractions and I don't need to be driving 45 mins to work them.
