Good latch

My LO is 8 days old and I'm not sure rate getting a good latch. I would not say that she hurts me but it is more than just a tugging. I get her to open really big and she goes down in it with a really big mouth but then she kind of reduces her grip to where she wants. I'm worried I'm letting her get used to a bad latch because the one she is using is not hurting as much as it did in the beginning.

Is it normal for baby to know how to get the best latch?
