Need some advice on cryptic pregnancy

Hi Ladies,

My husband and i have had TTTC for the last 18 months.  I was due for my period October 30, 2014 and am officially 32 days late.  I have never skipped a period all my years.  had I gotten AF when I was supposed to, my second period should have come on November 27.  I am fairly regular, and did chart ovulation in December while TTC.

My husband seems to think I am pregnant--and is thinking it's one of those "i didn't know I was pregnant" situations.  He did his research on it and we found out it's called a Cryptic Pregnancy.  He thinks the only reason we're realizing it might be this, is because we've been TTC for so long.

I'm reaching out to find out if anyone else has had this situation, or knows someone who has and can offer some advice on it while I wait for my doctors appointment for the ultrasound to find out.

I'm learning that it is more common than people realize--so ladies...anyone have any insight?

Re: Need some advice on cryptic pregnancy

  • Can you define cryptic pregnancy?
  • Loading the player...
  • Cryptic pregnancy, (or what i've learned from Google, lol) is basically when you are pregnant, but the levels of hcg are too low to detect on a HPT or a blood test.
  • Also, you can still get a monthly period and still maintain pregnancy.  This is less common in most of these situations.
  • Negative test means not pregnant at this time
Wait a week and if AF hasn't arrived, retest. Good luck!
  • it's not a question of not being pregnant needing a name.  It was just the name we read about online.

Not trying to shove  BFP in anyone's faces if I am, in fact, pregnant.  Just looking for some advice on anyone who maybe had gone through this.  I have been having some of the typical pregnancy symptoms, naueau, fatigue, tender breasts, etc...

I understand it's not going to be regular every month but 32 days late is still very late.  My RE had me go for bloodwork about 3 weeks ago, and said that the hormones were low that week so I should get my period within 2 weeks after that...they ran the bloodwork again and said they are still seeing low hormones for getting the period.

So with all these things that are irregular for me, a typical 27-year-old with no known medical issues, it makes you wonder whats happening and if it is something like the hcg is too low to be detected on a HPT
  • This is the article we read about cryptic pregnancy...i dont know if it has any value, or is even reputable, but I figured it was worth looking into.  I know that I am probably grasping at straws and hoping it may be some kind of "miracle" but as with anyone else who has had TTTC, wouldn't you be doing the same thing?

  • @hbanana18, you certainly said it best about spotting symptoms and hoping it's something else...and it is certainly very easy to self-diagnose with all the information (both true and false) available to us.

I'm hoping I get answers soon--whether it be in the form of my TOTM so I can start the IVF process, or that it be that rare case where the levels just aren't detected.

A little off topic, but how long after conception and/or missed period will you typically get a positive result on a HPT?

Assuming you have a perfect 28 day cycle, that's 1/2 a week late.

    1/2 week =/= very late

While we were ttc this summer... I had a 56 day cycle out of no where. I too had never skipped a period in all  my years. It happens. wait a week and if AF doesn't show, test again

  • I'm on CD104, PMS symptoms & all the negative HPT. I am breast feeding so I have a reasonable explanation.

Talk to your doctor (RE? Are you getting testing done?) during your next annual. If you've been TTC longer than 12 months you could see about getting your hormone levels investigated? I do know that HPT don't lie.

I have to say "cryptic pregnancy" is a new one! :-??

  • My "normal" ovulation was between day 19 and 20. The cycle I got pregnant I ovulated day 31. At no point did I think my period was late because I knew when I ovulated and I got a +hpt at 11dpo. My period would have been 12-13 days later than my normal cycle but still would have come 14 days after I ovulated if I wasn't pregnant. You're probably just having an off cycle.

Additionally, symptoms are meaningless. I had zero symptoms until 6 weeks (2 weeks after my missed period) and even then it was just sore boobs.

If you're really unsure gave a blood draw. But I suggest after 18 months ttc seeing an RE to rule out issues.

There is so much stupid in this thread.

But Dr. Google says this is all true so it has to be! It just has to be!
  • Ladies,

I am seeing an RE...I also took the advice from the last time I posted and planned on charting more specifically with my basal thermometer. I am experiencing things I have never experienced before, and having been trying to conceive for so long, yes, I am grasping at straws.  I'm sorry that many of you feel that I am "uneducated" on the whole situation of conception...or that I am not 100% sure how things work with ovulation.

There was no prerequesite on education before my RE took us on as patients...also, it appears that my husband has been the issue in conception.  His counts have been low since we started trying.  I have done the cycles of clomid, the HSG testing, more bloodwork than I care to experience again, and I am coming out completely normal.

@grandsequestration--I did take the advice I was given.  I have been charting daily since my original post, but have not gotten a spike in temp to show ovulation since my post.  I am at a loss of what is going on and I have a doctors appointment to figure it out...in the meantime, I'm here for answers while I learn about everything....my DH and i came into this blind thinking it would happen overnight.  We didn't think we would have to know everything about sperm, periods, ovulation and anything else...that it would happen right away.  The only reason we ended up getting checked out is because it was 4 months in and nothing had happened...and even after that, there were a lot of things that I didn't, and still don't understand.
  • @smilz4782, I have been charting to get the habit down.  Had I ovulated on time (and when i'm pretty sure I did based on other signs besides charting) I would have gotten my AF on Oct. 30.  I've been charting since my original post about being late.

If I am not getting a spike right now, I have been charting for a little over 2 weeks with no spike in temp.  but without a last period to go off of, it's certainly hard to try and estimate when the ovulation might happen.

After going to Fertility Friend, I decided to start charting right away instead of waiting for AF...where AF still hasn't happened, I'm not sure what to do.  32 days is a long time to be "late".  Or to miss a period all together because of not ovulating...which again, based on the ovulation test kits i used, plus the physical signs (discharge, ovarian pain) i can pinpoint the date that the egg was released.  Whether or not looking at the signs can determine ovulation, it's what i've gone by for years, that i've had my doctor confirm is ovulation based on my symptoms and bloodwork ran at the time of my suspected ovulation
  • Wait...If your RE says that your husband's counts are the problem why in earth did he give you clomid???

If you're charting you should see an obvious temp spike at ovulation. You can try to depend on "other signs besides charting" but absolutely none of them mean anything. Temping is the only way to confirm Ovulation.
  • We need to see your chart.

  • Our doctor put me on clomid b/c she said it coudln't hurt to produce a quality egg, especially being that my hubby's counts are so low.  We saw someone 8 months after having tried...sorry, that was a typo before, and we did it just to make sure since we thought it would happen right away.  I will post my chart when I get home from work today

This shit has to be mud.

Agree. There's way too much nonsense happening here.
  • You could be having an annovulatory cycle and won't/haven't ovulated. At which point, I would ask your "RE" to do an u/s to look at your follicles and if no signs of pending ovulation or past ovulation, I would ask for progesterone to force this cycle to come to an end. If there is a pseudo baby, progesterone won't hurt. But it will at least start your next cycle so that you can temp properly and chart your cycles correctly.
