Bleeding at 4-5 weeks

This is the first time I've posted anything , but I'm 4w4d (yay) we didn't expect it to happen so quickly so I'm overly paranoid something will go wrong. But yesterday I started spotting or bleeding. I'd been spottinh very lightly the day before (only when I went to the bathroom and wiped) and then yesterday morning it was a bit heavier (again, only when I wiped) and went back to very light spotting. I went to the ER and they confirmed it's not ectopic but other than that said it could really go either way where I'm so early on in pregnancy. Has anyone else experienced this or can someone explain exactly the difference of spotting and bleeding? I have an appt with my Gyno tomorrow but curious to see if anyone else is in the same boat

  • Spotting can be very normal in pregnancy. I would call just to let your OB know but most likely it's nothing to worry about.
For future reference call your OB's after hours line rather than going to the emergency room. Those doctors are not obstetricians and aren't much help. Obviously you know that now since you are still asking this question after being seen by a doctor.

I am having light spotting too.  I'm 5w5d.  Called my friend (who is an OB), she says it's normal...if its more brown. Bright red blood and cramping are not a good sign.  Glad you are going to your OB tomorrow!
  • I had spotting with my last two, brown/pink/orangish-red.  I had it on and off from week 4 to week 10.  I went on to have uneventful pregnancies, so spotting doesn't always mean the worst.  This might not be the correct definition, but to me spotting is something that you see but would not require a pad.
  • I agree with PPs, and would add: did they do a test to determine your blood type/do you know already? I had no idea this was a possible issue until I had some bleeding early in my pregnancy. They did a blood test and found out I'm rh- so even for a small amount of bleeding I had to get an injection (rhogam/winrho) to be on the safe side and was told to call if I had any amount of bleeding throughout the rest of my pregnancy.
