Nutro Ultra Dog Food (NBR obvs)

Does anyone else use this dry dog food for their fur babies? We have used this for years with no problems but we recently opened a new bag and it made my schnoodle very sick :(

We all had a stomach bug last week so we thought Gatsby got a touch of it because he started vomiting yellow bile during the night. Then it got worse and he broke out in these huge bumps under his skin that felt like hives. They were around his eyes too. So we stopped the food and are giving him chicken and rice and benedryl. He is much better today but I feel so bad that we just kept giving him the food...

Anyone else experiencing this? If not, heads up if your dog eats this. I've read a lot of complaints from Oct and Nov but no recalls that I can see yet. We have a call in to the vet too.

  • No, we eat a different dry kibble, but thanks for the heads up!  Yeah, I'd keep doing an online search every day for the next few days to see if it turns up in recall news or something.  Hope he doesn't get sick again and continues to feel better!

  • No, but you need to consult your veterinarian along with what you are doing already.  They need to know about it and may want to perform some bloodwork to be sure that is nothing more than GI upset.

This is one reason why we feed raw and homemade.....but that is NOT for everyone and shouldn't be!

  • Food really doesn't cause hives. This sounds like an allergic reaction to an outside allergen. Maybe a sting from a bug or something in the environment. Maybe a new cleaner in your house?

Try a bland diet (boiled chicken and rice) for 2-3 days and then try the food again. If it happens again call your vet and let them know as well as call the company. If it is the food it could be just that bag.

  • I don't use that brand, but I just wanted to say I hope your dog continues to feel better! Poor thing!
  • @aggiebug‌

I have no experience with dog allergies but I do know that food can and does cause hives in humans with food allergies. Chemicals in foods can also cause hives in humans (without an allergy).

    Are dogs different?

I'm genuinely curious as I truly know little to nothing about dog allergies (or dog health).
  • Thank you for the heads up! We don't use that brand but that is very scary :( I hope your pup is back to 100% soon!!

  • It definitely might be worth calling them to find out if they changed their formula at all or anything like that. If nothing else to report what has happened to your little pup. Hope he's feel better soon!

My vet has often said "paws, ears and rears" when it comes to dog allergies, meaning that if/when dogs are allergic, symptoms usually manifest in these areas... licking/chewing paws, butt scooting, chronic ear nastiness.  But I am no vet.... wish I was!
  • Our vet will be calling us back since she was not there today @kefttsc‌

@aggiebug‌ this was definitely the food. The more we gave him, the worse it got. But our dog is very sensitive (almost died from vaccination reactions once) so maybe that was another way it manifested in him besides the vomiting. We'll see what the vet says.

I think we will call the company too. Thanks everyone.

And I agree with most of her advice but she doesn't know my dogs history, which is why I am consulting my vet. I respect our F15 veterinarians!

Dogs are different. The don't respond to food allergies/sensitivities with facial swelling, hives, etc like people do. Many allergic reactions can cause vomiting and diarrhea secondary to histamine release. Allergic reactions seen in dogs are typically secondary to vaccines, insect bites, etc.
  • Glad you are in contact with your vet.  Typically we see itchy skin and licking paws with foods but hives is almost always a contact allergy.

@dreamkin84 it sounds like you have very definitively proven it was that food which is good.  Definitely call the company and talk with them, it honestly could be just a batch thing or a formula problem.

@cogdis. Hives can happen with a food allergy but it is definitely not typical and not nearly as common as it is in people.  It is based on how our immune systems respond to an allergen, they underlying mechanism is the same but the symptoms generally aren't. That is why I recommended stopping the food and trying it again in a few days once symptoms had improved to prove it was the food and not something else in the environment.

  • Thanks for the heads up! We used to use that brand and were just talking about switching back since we never had any issues with them before.. Will definitely start a small bag just in case! I hope your pup feels better soon!

I learned something new today! Always a good day when I learn something new! :-)

  • We use Nutro dog food and no issues, I will say though that our dog licks his paws alllll the time and I never knew that could be a reaction. I know if we give him certain treats and he's allergic that his ears twitch constantly so we stop the treats and it goes away after a few days
