WWYD: Newborn prefolds vs AIOs

We are expecting #2 in April and plan to CD asap.  I have read several peoples opinions of newborn diapers on this site and others  and it seems that prefolds and covers are what people prefer so I bought 48 prefolds and 10 covers. Then a friend gave me 28 BG newborn AIOs (including a Jules!), and 6 Lil joeys, so I am reconsidering my purchase.  I haven't opened the prefolds and the covers are also still NIP so I can resell them easily if I decide to use the AIOs.

So...would you mind sharing which Nb diaper you liked better and the reason why. What would you do if both were just sitting in your nursery.

Re: WWYD: Newborn prefolds vs AIOs

  • Keep the prefolds for sure. You may like the AIO's too, but many babies outgrow the absorbency of those pretty quickly. The lil joeys were outgrown here (size and absorbency) at around 3-4 weeks old. I didn't have BG NB aio's.

The AIO's will be great for when you have help, nighttime when you don't want to worry about prefolds, and for the diaper bag.

You may not need 48 prefolds though. Are they all NB size or a mix of NB and small?

Yay for your friend giving you all that! That's awesome!

  • I would keep it all.  Or maybe return/sell 1/2 the prefolds and covers and that way have a mix.  Or exchange half the newborn prefolds for small prefolds.  Prefolds just really will hold in nb runny poo better.  But my one and only BG AIO was nice to have around.

Depending on the size of your prefolds, I would keep the smalls and some covers.  As long as you don't have a tiny baby, small prefolds can always be folded down to fit.

  • Good info. Thanks ladies.
My prefolds are all smalls. Our plan is to start CD asap, but I still have three packages of newborn diapers from baby showers with my son, and so we will use those up first.

At what weight are most babies growing out of small prefolds?
I know my son didn't fit into his one size AIOs until about 4 months old and really just need diapers to get us to that point. I certainly have an embarrassing large number of AIOs.
  • Oh and since I have you prefold-ers attention, is there a good way to fold them for a newborn. I have a few snappies and was planning on looking up a few youtube videos when April gets closer, but besides just folding it in thirds, should I do something more specific. We are having a girl if that matters.

I still use smalls with a small Bamboo booster in my pockets for my one year old son.

As for folds I would practice a few.  Jellyroll and Angel Wing are my favorite.

I still use the Angel Wing for my son.

  • Awesome thank you! I will practice my folding skills! I never thought about using the small prefolds for boosters for my son. I guess i am lucky that he is not a big wetter, and a simple FST can hold him for a good 2-3 hours.

How many newborn covers would you recommend? I have 10 in a combo of bummies and thirsties and one super cute Squishy Tushy, but my girlfriend also had a bunch of thirsties diaper covers in size small that just need some velcro repairs that I didn't take, but she certainly wanted me to. Would you grab those too? Any idea how difficult/easy velcro repair on a Thirsties cover is?
