Self-Weaning From Night Nursing

I pretty much follow ap before I even knew there was a name for it.  I basically just did what came natural/did what my mom did.  Anyway.  My first ds we co-slept with until a little past 1 and he nursed until 15 months.  I weaned him from these 2 things because #2 was on the way.  I didn't feel tandem nursing was for us and I let him nurse until 2 months before #2 was born.  I put him in in his own bed at 1 because I knew #2 was coming and I knew we didn't have room in our bed for all 4 of us.  #2 is 21 months old now, still nursing, still co-sleeping.  #3 isn't on the way yet, but I'd say it won't be long.  My period just returned when ds was 16 months, so I'd say we will be pregnant before too long.  I have NO desire to wean him from nursing and co-sleeping.  I let him nurse to sleep each night and then when he is asleep I put him in his crib.  But 3 hours later he's back in our bed and nursing all night.  Just curious if anyone ever had a little one that just stopped night nursing and it was on their terms.  Just curious if there is an average age they stop this or if it is completely unique.

Re: Self-Weaning From Night Nursing

  • I don't know how helpful I'm going to be since you're past the age, but my son stopped waking at night to nurse at 14 months.

I don't know that there's an average age, I would assume, like everything there's a range.

  • It wouldn't have happened for us. We had to bed transition at 14mo because the night nursing had deteriorated to 30-90min. At 23mo she mostly sleeps through the night and only night nurses when she isn't feeling well.

  • There's no real average from women I've talked to. For DS he was just shy of 3.5 when he self night weaned, and he self weaned entirely about two months after that.
  • Not sure if this is 'self weaning' or not, but my DD is 12 weeks old, she sleeps in a PnP next to the bed (or in bed with me) and her night time feedings are currently about 15 min long (give or take a bit) and usually only twice a night.
