Boob control...BF, who is still at it?

This thread made me feel better about our current situation last month so figured I would start it again! I also know some mamas were going to try to wean. How's it going?!
How are you all feeling entering 13 months?
Any other questions/comments/concerns....

I have been starting to get a little anxious about weaning. I tried to start by offering the sippy cup when he shows some signs of wanting to nurse. It works during waking hours sometimes but he still flips his shit if I don't let him nurse to sleep. I figured we would get through the holidays and really try to cut back in the new year since I MAY ttgp this summer! Although I'm not looking forward to AF making her ugly return.

Re: Boob control...BF, who is still at it?

  • I hear ya @finaroo! : ( there are days he is just miserable unless he has complete access. I wonder how we will ever stop! Part of me likes the time but the other part stresses about it ever ending!

  • @keight38 I'm the opposite of you-- If we are snuggling down for a nap, I can get him to take a warmed bottle of WCM from me pretty easily. If he's wide awake and decides he wants boob, OMG full on melt down until he gets it.

I would love to wean. My nips are killing me. I had my first pp period over the weekend, but it only lasted 2 days... ? So I'm not sure what that means.

As I've always said, I don't mind nursing morning and bedtime. I just do not want to nurse during the day on the weekends because it confuses my boobs for workdays. So I have to sit here with cabbage leaves on my boobs and drink a ton of peppermint tea on Mondays.

  • I thought I was going to just nurse for however long he wanted to. I really don't mind it at all and think I would miss it when we were done. However, sometime between yesterday and this morning I developed this hole in my nipple. I don't know if it is from him having a bad latch a couple times, along with teething and getting a new tooth on top just a day or so ago, or what the problem is. But when I nursed him this morning on that side I was in tears. When he was younger I had something kind of similar and it would hurt right at first and then I would be fine. Now it hurts the whole time he is nursing and even throbs just sitting here. So now I want to be done because of that. He takes WCM no problem from a sippy and I have a little milk in the freezer still. Anyway, sorry this is so long and whiney. Anyone else have any advice?.... Just power through the pain until it heals eventually? I have always started nursing sessions on the right side, maybe need to start on the other side for awhile? Thanks for any advice!
  • @JoeLies‌ I can see a hole. I don't remember him biting me at any one point but it is possible he just kind of chewed on that spot while teething? I don't know. I don't want to quit because of this because in the beginning I always told myself to never quit on a bad day.... But this kind of sucks.
  • @eboote I have had a hole before and it was verrrry painful. I'm sorry! I just had to feed the other side only and hand express or pump the side with the hole. I also slathered with lanolin all day. It was really a lot better after 24 hours of no nursing on that side. So, I think it can heal fast if you give it a break.

  • @sing2phins So she doesn't nurse or take WCM at home? What does she drink on the weekends?

Thanks for the advice. Do you nurse in different positions? I wondered if that would help in the future? We will be just nursing on one side today and pumping on the other side. I think it will help that I work the next 3 nights so I just pump at work and he goes to daycare during the day for me to sleep a little. So not much nursing except usually in the morning and then before I go to work.
  • Still nursing on demand here.  L was sick over the weekend/holiday, and all she wanted to do was cuddle and nurse, so my supply had a huge increase this weekend!  I was hoping to move it to just morning/night and no pumping at work, but I'm so full today that I'm pumping now, and will probably pump later too.

We started WCM last week (2 weeks before her birthday), and she took it like anything else.  She didn't bat an eye when we gave it to her.  So we're making the transition.

  • @sing2phins and others who are only nursing 1-2 times a day: Are you nursing both sides at these sessions?

I have been offering both sides in the morning so I will be more comfortable all day. I forgot to give both sides this morning, so I'm lopsided and won't get to feed him til 5:30. I fail. Hopefully decongestants, cabbage, and peppermint tea help dry it up a little. I'm having to hand express because I feel a hard spot and mastitis loves my ass. Dammit.

  • @kamakaziartist‌ thank you! I changed a black diaper here this afternoon so the hole is now bleeding- must have been from when I nursed him first thing this morning. I got pretty good at hand expressing when I had plugged ducts back in the day. I wouldn't have known that I shouldn't pump though. And to top it all off I think I now have a stomach bug. Counting down the hours til MH gets home.
  • We are still nursing before bed, generally once in the middle of the night and then randomly on the weekends and some mornings if I'm too lazy to get her a sippy. We are 2 and done and I'm in no rush to get AF back, so I don't have a set date for complete weaning. I'm just glad to be done with the pump for days. I quit pumping a month ago and I don't miss it at all.

  • I'm doing MOTN only in order to not wake up the whole house. My kid has never once slept through the night. I don't even know if there is milk left anymore. He is a great eater after therapy but not great with milk. Dr said 16-24 ounces and we are lucky to get 10.

Hannah is still nursing. I am trying to get down to just morning and night (and MOTN if it occurred) but it's not going well. I tried putting her down for nap without nursing all weekend and she wasn't having it. I finally gave in and nursed and she fell asleep right away. I don't know how to cut this out because she apparently inherited my stubbornness. At daycare they just put her down and let her CIO, and they claim she only cries for an minute or 2. I tried that and she cried for like 10 minutes before I finally went in and got her. So that's where we're at.

This is exactly us too @trtlcrzy‌. We had so much trouble putting her down for naps over the weekend with and without nursing and she right out today for my mom. Go figure.
  • Like @Joelies S tapered/self-weaned over time and our last nursing session wasn't great, I think because my supply had just dwindled once I stopped pumping.  I miss it sometimes, but mostly it's been good, especially because I feel he was ready to.  He had always gotten BM in bottles from DH and then at daycare and didn't seem to try to nurse when I started giving him bottles of OWCM.  I cut out one feeding at a time with about a week between each one.  I haven't had to pump and while if I hand express I could still get a little milk, I'm not uncomfortable or have had to do anything about that. My body has seemed to adjust.
  • Emmett's still nursing.  We do a wake nurse and a bedtime nurse almost everyday.  He will demand his morning nurse sometimes and other days I'm the one offering out of habit.  I try not to nurse to sleep but it's so easy.  On the weekends he nurses 5 times or more.  I'm letting him lead the way.  Our ped supports that and I'm so thankful for that.

We started WCM a few weeks ago.  He doesn't reject it but he doesn't chug it.  I only offer it in a sippy. Emmett's transitioning to the toddler room at daycare so they are starting to wean him from the bottle.  Next week he'll be down to one bottle a day then we're done the week after that.  I'm not sad about that, I'm ready to be done with the bottle washing and pumping.

I'm not sure if I'll miss breastfeeding or not.  I suppose it will be bittersweet.

  • In case anyone wants to hear my whining I believe I have ended up with a plugged duct in my areola. Wahhh! It is so stinkin painful that I just can't have J nurse on that side at all or pump. And the last time I tried to pump at work the nipple was still bloody and I dumped out bloody milk. So sad. I believe this might end our breastfeeding journey! He nursed on the other side this morning. Okay done whining. Thanks for listening!
  • @Eboote‌ :( Sorry mama. That sucks. I feel for you.

  • We're still at it and will be until he gives it up.  Now it's mostly in the morning, before bed, and sometimes when I get home from work-- depending on whether he is being a crab or is having fun playing.  He doesn't drink nearly enough milk yet for weaning.

We're going to be TTC at the end of January and I'm guessing N will wean when that is successful.  If not I think we'll try "not offer, not refuse" in the spring to nudge him in the direction of weaning if he isn't there yet.

  • Dumping the pump is a great feeling!

Since some of you convinced me it was humanly possible to do one-sided feedings AM&PM, I'm sitting here with cabbage on my boobs since I have dropped those feedings and am dealing with a little engorgement.

Now I just have to remember that right side = night side, and I'm good to go.

Crazy to think I'm 24 hours between nursing on each boob.

  • Um…. considering I'm still nursing my over 2 year old as well, I don't see an end anywhere in sight for us. They both still get it on demand.

@trtlcrzy‌ have you tried distraction techniques?

Although I will say, it didn't matter at time what I tried to hand E. She would still HAVE to have a grip on whatever nipple she wasn't nursing from. Merp.

I have tried holding her hand and putting my shirt in the way and neither of them worked. It's usually when I'm nursing her to sleep so I'm sure it's some kind of soothing mechanism. Luckily she leaves the other nip alone.
Have you tried a teething necklace like this? https://www.smartmomjewelry.com

I wear this when I'm nursing sometimes or when we are out. It gives her something to grab on to. Babies love jewelry. ;)

  • We're still at it at 12.5 months.  I've officially dumped the pump! So, excited about that.  We'll BF until he's not interested.

I have a perma-bruise on the inside of my left boob. Hannah's new favorite thing to do is grab the skin between her pointer finger and thumb and then basically do the same thing you do when you snap. Only on left though, she never does it to the right.
I've given Emmett various things to hold while nursing to stop him from pinching.  I even turned the TV on to cartoons once for him to watch while nursing. I wonder if it's just a phase Hannah's going through. Emmett used to pinch me but now doesn't seem to do it.  He will periodically open hand slap my boobs or chest while nursing.  I hold his hand when he starts that.

I've also started giving warnings that if he continued to pinch or hit we'd stop nursing.
