Blankets in the crib

I know I don't post much on the board so I hope you don't mind me asking a question.

LO has had a quilt in his crib since he was around 9 months old. It is not tucked in and he is out of it not long after going down for a nap/night sleep. My Mom was asking how do I transition him from this loose blanket to actual bedding (top sheet, blanket) and I had no idea how to respond. Is there a time to start to have a tucked in blanket in the crib even if he sleeps on every square inch of his bed every night as he moves so much in the crib.

Any help here?

Re: Blankets in the crib

  • I think regular bedding comes with a big kid bed. Mine had crocheted blankets at 5-6 months but nothing tucked in until DD moved to a full size bed.

  • I agree with @jesselayne8‌- I don't think tucked bedding/ flat sheets are intended for cribs. Or, at least I haven't seen them being used until the transition to a bed. The boys (turned 2 in September) have slept with a blanket since one and are now under a heavy blanket for winter. While they don't move around as much as they did when they were babies, I often find them balled up at the foot of the crib. They do, however, tend to keep their pillows with them as they roll, so I feel like that's progress!!

  • This is funny to me because my older daughter has been in a big girl bed since she was 2, but she still moves around the bed and untucks herself most of the time and she's 3 1/2 now.

  • We just use loose blankets until they are in a big kid bed. We also just keep a space heater in the room so they stay warm.

  • My guy only just got to have a light blanket over him about a month ago (so at 20m) and I am in Canada! Last winter he slept in a long sleeved onesie and footed fleece pjs. The thermostat was set at 19 for his room. We are planning on getting a slightly larger and heavier blanket for him for Christmas as he transitions to a toddler bed. I would agree with no real bedding until in a toddler or twin bed...which for most kids is around 2 I think.
  • I'm with everyone else - We used layers (onesie, sleeper, sleep sack if necessary) for the winter he was 9-12 months. This year we've started with a thin blanket, although most nights it winds up balled up somewhere not keeping him warm.

I had to laugh at @kaf7's mention of having the thermostat being set to 19...even though you said Canada, I still had to remind myself of the metric system! :)

  • A is almost 21 months and in her crib.  She moves SO much at night, I have no plans of even giving her a blanket.  I am going to give her a toddler sized pillow for Christmas, so we will see if that gets any use!  We have always used sleep sacs of varied fabrics that are weather appropriate and we (and she!) have been very happy! Seriously....she's so wiggly I don't think she'll get a big girl bed until she's in school! ;)
