Pregnant after IF

Issues weaning from progesterone anyone?

Hi Ladies,

I am currently a lurker, though I was active on this board with my previous pregnancy with DS, who is now almost 14 months old.  My current pregnancy was a huge surprise, so I didn't really get involved on the PAIF board this time around.

Now, I am here because was hoping to get some opinions from ladies who weaned off progesterone, especially IM progesterone.  I am just over 12 weeks and with this pregnancy I have been on IM progesterone, estrogen patches and prednisone, just like I did for preg w/ DS (who turned out perfect :)  For my previous pregnancy, my RE had me start weaning progesterone around 11 weeks and I was off by about 12 weeks.  I know this is quite typical and most everyone says they stopped progesterone without issues at the beginning of the 2nd trimester.

Well, this time around, my levels dropped pretty dramatically within about 4 days of decreasing from 1 cc to 0.5 cc of IM progesterone.  I am going back on 1 cc daily.  I am just wondering if anyone had a similar problem and if so, what was the resolution?  How long did you continue progesterone?  Is there anyone who continued until 14 weeks or even more?

TIA for any information you might have!
GL everyone!

Re: Issues weaning from progesterone anyone?

  • I am currently on endometrin (suppository) 3 times daily. I'm 12.5 weeks and will be starting to wean at 13 weeks. I'll do 2x daily for week 13 and 1x dailyvfor week 14. I am taking it a little longer than usual, as my RE usually starts weaning at 11 weeks. This is because I had a SCH with bleeding so my RE said staying on the progesterone longer couldn't hurt and was just out of precaution. I'm a little nervous to start weaning. I don't have experience with it yet but just want to let you know that I will be on it til 15 weeks.

  • I have a friend, not on these boards, who is having to keep progesterone shots going for her entire pregnancy, although it's a different type beyond the first trimester. Hers was a surprise BFP, too, for whatever that means. They tried stopping later in the second tri, and her progesterone crashed again to something like 8.5! Baby is perfectly fine, but for whatever reason her placenta is just not picking up the slack. I say this not because I think that's what's happening with you, but because there are pregnancies that can turn out just fine but need long term progesterone support. Hope this isn't too scary a story to tell you.

Congratulations! I hope this is a temporary problem for you! And feel free to join us on this board, as there are other women here who had a little surprise in between cycles. :)

  • Thanks, Ladies.  This is all helpful information.  I did talk to my RE again, and she is not concerned, she said she has some patients who need the extra support through 16 weeks or so.  We are going to try weaning again in a little while.  Also, I do plan to discuss w/ my OB, who I will be seeing this week anyway.
