Question re Supplementing

I'm sure this has been asked and I'm mobile so I apologize in advance. Tomorrow I have to send DD to DC with formula bottles. I plan on mixing 10 oz of BM with 10 oz of formula for 4 five oz bottles. Can I mix tonight for tomorrow? TIA.

Re: Question re Supplementing

  • Not 100% sure since we only use formula once in a while, but I seem to remember once mixed, formula has to be used within a couple hours
  • Loading the player...
  • Formula can be mixed and stored for up to 24 hrs if refrigerated. You can put them in separate containers and have DC mix them if you are worried about mixing with BM too far in advance.
  • Thanks everyone!

  • Just to update - DD drank the entire 5 oz of formula at DC. (Big Sigh)

  • FWIW:   I never mixed them because i wanted to make sure she had all of the BM.   So even if that meant feeding her a 3oz bottle of BM followed by a 3oz bottle of formula I would do that.   I couldn't stand the thought that if she didn't finish a mixed bottle then I was wasting some of the BM.

Glad she took the formula OK :)   It was a sad thing for me at first but ultimately freeing...
  • @apinkpelican - I ended up doing two bottles formula and two bottles BM. I didn't want to waste 10 oz of BM if she didn't like it.

I cried while mixing the bottles this morning. I know I shouldn't fee guilty, but I do. Every pumped ounce counts!

Did you go with the earths best brand?
@becole42 - Yes. I bought the sensitive version. I didn't know how DD's stomach would handle it so I thought sensitive was better. I'm also nervous because I'm allergic to dairy so it's never been in my system. She has some Stoneybrook yobaby yogurt yesterday and didn't have any reactions so I'm cautiously optimistic that she isn't allergic.

  • Hey @Jcrewgirl85‌, can you keep me updated on how she does? I'm in the same boat and will need to be supplementing soon. Mine currently takes three 5oz bottles of BM at daycare but I'm starting to not pump enough. I'm probably going to do 10oz BM and 5 oz formula. I'm curious if we can use the same amount of formula as BM or if the formula bottles need to have more than the BM.

  • Yes, I will @biscuitsgirl2007. I used the same amount of formula as I did BM. She usually gets four 5 oz bottles. DC tried a formula bottle and she sucked it down. I will say that today is the first day in the three months that I've been back to work where I'm not freaking out about how many oz I need to pump. What I pump is what I pump and I'll make up the difference in formula.

I read somewhere that if your baby gets 6 oz of BM a day, they are still getting all the benefits of BM.
